Vent Windows

hey where are yall getting your replacement vent window assemblies? mine are in really bad shape.
i dont wanna pick-a-junk em id rather go with a new one but LMC Truck is wanting $350 a peice for theirs and i dont really feel like wraping 700 some odd dolars on vent windows im kinda a budget build.

thanks!

Re: Vent Windows

I got mine new from GM and yes, they were damn expensive. I think the only other option would be to re-do the weatherstripping and paint your stockers. A whole lot cheaper but more labor intensive for sure.

Re: Vent Windows

id love to just save the ones i got but the wing hinges on the side are rusted pretty bad and look like they will give way at any time. and being that the truck has no ac and isnt gonna get it and i live in houston tx (btw it was 80 today) i really need em to open lol. just bugs me to wrap so much in vent windows heck thats more $ than ive spent on most the other stuff on the truck lol

how much did you give for your gm ones?

Re: Vent Windows

I'd still give the wrecker a look, I got two in awesome shape along with door panels, a headliner, visors, heater control unit and seatbelts for $50. Check your wrecker anyway, even though the trucks might not be in the best shape at the pick-n-pull you never know, you might find one that had recently replaced vent windows before it died.

Re: Vent Windows

I second a pick a part. Look for newer (up to '91) Suburbans. I parted out a POS that had really nice vent windows; they went in my '79. The ones from my '87 are all cleaned up, ready to go in the '74 soon, too. Rebuilding them is a total PITA.

Re: Vent Windows

GM doesn't have them anymore. The last set I purchase was over $535 retail...
If you are on a budget, check the salvage yards.

I second the salvage yard deal...

GM does still have them...

GM is out of stock on the last one, but will have more soon. They come complete with everything BUT the vent window handle/latch. If you know someone at your local GM dealer you may be able to get a decent deal on them.

are they the same from 73 and up?

Re: Vent Windows

I would not pay so much for the vent windows I would rather go with the one piece products kit for less money and it includes all the weather stripping. thats an option to consider.

Re: Vent Windows

My catalog breaks it down like this...

1973-1978 LH 473153
1973-1978 RH 473154

1979 LH 14004765
1979 RH 14004766

1980 LH 14014325
1980 RH 14014326

1981-1984 LH 20307715
1981-1984 RH 20307716

and the numbers I posted earlier are 85-91

These are just the GM part numbers. Now, will the newer ones fit and function in older trucks....possibly. It would just come down to trial and error.

Man, i came to Houston in June for Heatwave Showdown with no A/C in my chevy. By the time i got back to MS i had all the parts ordered for my A/C. It gets freaking hot in Houston. So IMO i would take the money your going to spend on the vent windows and get the a/c working.

Re: Vent Windows

thanks guys! thats extremely helpfull. i actually work at a gm dealer so i could prob work an ok deal on em but some of the sugestions yall through out sound cheaper still. i actually scored a drivers side one thats in pretty good shape for free this weekend so thats pretty awesome. i love truck parts for christmas! im def gonna check some that stuff out!
with the 2-3 mnths a year that we have of 100+ days here in houston in the summer vent windows are a must since my truck dont have a/c and im not quite ready to dump money and fab time into brackets and a system.

Re: Vent Windows

hell whadda ya mean bro? im in houston too, and this is my 5th squarebody truck in 3 years so far. i do definately feel ya on the need for vent windows, but adding your a/c isnt that difficult or expensive as u might think. my last truck got upgraded a/c from pasadena pick-a-part for less than $200! so many trucks to choose from at the time. i robbed the complete bracket setup from a 88-91 with alt, a/c compressor and power steering plus the lines for my '82 all for $120. all was from a system that still had freon in it too. put it on my truck, pulled a vaccuum on the system , and charged it myself with the cans from autozone that have the guage on them. never had a problem with it either, sold the truck and it was still working some 7 mos later. its not all that expensive if you look in the right places.

i lucked up and didnt spend money till i found a complete non-open system and got it all, if the setup you get from the junkyard had been open, then yes id buy a new compressor, but just look. isnt the first ive done this way for cheap like this, just has been the last. i dont need to look for it again for this truck now, i bought the truck and it was all together and working. i took it off to do some motorwork and just never put it back on yet becuase now i want to paint everything so it would be easier without it.

while im not looking, you probably need to get a head start. i look till i find them, never lookd more than a week before i found a nice unopened system with freon in it. they are out there. and the guys parting the suburbans on CL too. good place to look ;)

There are a couple of running changes, but all will interchange. They chenged the shape of the glass at least twice, and it will have corresponding weatherstrip. There is also a second bracket on the front edge of the assembly that does not get used in later doors (so if you are using later windows in an earler door, you will have an extra hole in the door with nowhere to go).

yup on the 2nd/extra hole but fits fine without using it,one on the inside of the a pillar and one down from the twist lock

chick btw im a chick. :D

problem i got with putting an a/c system in is that im runnin old school 60's model double hump heads so i dont have accesory mount ups. i have to custom fab brackets for EVERYTHING that hangs on the front of my motor. already did it for my ps pump and all that. its not a big deal think it took me like 20 min to do it including fab and bolt up time but theres some other stuff i want off my plate before i go into an a/c job.
so right now i just want to throw new vent windows in it which i would do even if i do put a/c in it though.

Re: Vent Windows

wow well i am quite impressed and sorry for the gender mishap. "car chicks" are definately rare. I guess i dont look too good, built by a girl is right there above your build thread lol.

I am running into a similar prob on another build of mine. '62 283 motor in a '80 monte carlo. I always wanted this setup, but also not giving up the ac. the motor runs fine, but i wont put it in until that prob is solved. i too want serpentine and ac, the only option for me is finding a set of 305 vortec heads. they seem to be as rare as car chicks :)
that would solve just about everything except for having to dish out more money for another intake, but hell its worth it, im keeping that one for me as a really nice DD.

Re: Vent Windows

lol no worries. yah we are really rare.

trust me i would LOVE to put a/c on her right now and say buck everything else it can wait! but i gotta get my exhaust run, my carb tweeked, some deff needed body work, a radio and other misc stuff. plus i HAVE to get this ole girl tagged and registered! i cant bear to look at her in the garage any more and not being able to drive her. but im def considering making the drop wait to put a/c on first because this summer is gonna kill me. i dont demand many creature comforts but as you well know you gotta be a beast to want to tackle houston summers with no a/c.

Re: Vent Windows
