MOOG 4X4 Part Info

I am currently gathering parts for my 1972 K5 Blazer. I started with rockauto.com and put together a list of part numbers but they were spread out under different suspension headings so I would like to verify before ordering and thought this may help some other people.

Re: MOOG 4X4 Part Info

I have been researching Moog numbers also recently.
My info showed ES375L and ES375R for the tie rod numbers; not
ES357L that your application shows?
All the other #'s are same as what I found.
Moog ES362S for the steering linkage at pitman arm.
Does anyone out there have a part# for the 4wd pitman arm with power steering?
Ron

I ordered Moog tie rod ends for my 72 K10 project and they don't seem to be the right ones, even though the measurements match up correctly for the part that is shown for this truck. I did put a 2" lift on the truck and installed a drop pitman arm, but the tie rods seem to be too long. I tried them with the old pitman arm, and I seem to have the same issue...they are too long. The truck has power steering and it is a 4WD. Has anyone else run into this?

Thanks for the part numbers, I spend a lot of hours ID'ing parts for my 4x4's. This saves a lot of time.

71sixer, looks like there is a mismatch, I know that the threads should go the opposite direction on each piece. The sleeve that goes between and joins them is for adjusting. I would go back to the start point and make sure that the parts are correct for the 72 Dana 44 - i.e.: pitman arm, raised/stock steering knuckle arm, both tie rod ends. Last make sure your steering box, wheel is in the center position (count turns each way). Also, try removing the drag link bar (knuckle to knuckle)and then sent steering system. Hope that helps...

Re: MOOG 4X4 Part Info

The third picture in my first post shows the location of the tie rod with the steering box directly in the center, and with the wheels straight. As you can see, there is about 2" of overlap. I guess my question, what is the correct measurement for these parts on a 72k10 with Dana 44? Everything on this truck is stock except for the 2" lift and I installed a drop pitman arm to bring the steering linkage back down to the stock location.

The one on the steering arm look different from mine, best i can remember the part numbers were the same except a L and R designation, they were also the same length too, yours look to be different lengths..

Here's a shot of the link on my steering arm on my 72 both these joints were Moog.

Do you have any measurements that I can reference? Curious as to what the length from the pitman arm to steering arm is, and the tie rod lengths.

I can measure the length center to center of the joints for you tomorrow and i'll get the length of the sleeve and the length of the exposed threads if that helps.

Re: MOOG 4X4 Part Info

Just by looking the drag link ends look correct, a long and a short end. I've had the two come close to touching inside the adjusting sleeve but never had to trim an end to get a correct wheel. Are you sure your steering box is centered correctly? It kind of looks like your pitman arm is rotated too far back in your third pic but really hard to tell. With your steering box centered correctly your pitman arm should be about 90 degrees to the frame. You say you changed it out for a dropped arm, make sure it's in the correct position on the shaft...it can go on in any position but in order for the pinch bolt to go thru it has to be in the recess on the shaft. Maybe give us another pic but from farther back showing the pitman arm and box?

I owe you an apoligy, guess my memory isn't what it used to be. Yes the ends are different lengths, From center to center i'm at 16 1/4 give or take. I took these pic's for you, hope they help.

This has me completely baffled now. Mine measures 13 1/4" from pitman arm to steering arm - center to center. Here are a few more pictures. I double checked pitman arm placement, and I could only get it on one way. Splines match up, and the bolt is in.

Something I'm noticing is that my pitman arm doesn't sit perpendicular to the truck like the other pictures I'm seeing. Possibly the wrong steering box?? It was on the truck when I bought it.

Re: MOOG 4X4 Part Info

I don't think your steering box is centered, you need to count the number of turns from full left to right and divide that number in half... Then bring your wheel back around to that number. Don't worry about centering your steering wheel unless it's real close.. You may need to pull it to get it right. That should get you to where you can hook up your draglink.

Re: MOOG 4X4 Part Info

Picture shows the steering box centered...I don't think I could miss that. Lock to lock is 1.5 turns. I turned it .75 of a turn to get it center. In fact, with the steering box all the way to what would be the left, I still don't have enough length to connect the tie rods.

Have you tried the original pitman arm?

I think I will try that next and give an update. Does 1.5 turns lock to lock sound right?

Re: MOOG 4X4 Part Info

I agree, my pitman arm is all straight out the side not angled back, are you sure the steering wheel was straight when you took it apart? Try turning the wheel to one side then to the other while counting the turns, then go back half the turns and have a look.

I don't think your truck is any different than my 72, if you pop the ends off and thread them into the sleeve and get it set to approximately the same length as mine you will be fine.. I also used a liberal amount of anti seize on both my steering links and tie rod ends.

Yes that sounds about right, I think if you go back to the stock pitman arm you will be fine. You can kind of see how your drop arm isn't straight, you really don't need it for just a 2" lift.

Re: MOOG 4X4 Part Info

I forgot about the drop pitman arm, yea i'd try taking the old one and look at the splines and see if they are wrong or different from the original.

Most steering boxes are 3.5 or 4.5 turns if i remember correctly, 3,5 being a quick turn ratio.

Re: MOOG 4X4 Part Info

Ok guys, I feel like a goofball now. I wasn't turning the steering box all the way. I got some leverage on it and it turned further. I guess since there was still fluid in it, there was too much resistance to turn all the way by hand. It turns a little over 3 turns now. Also, the drop arm does not work for a 2" lift. It hit the spring when I turned it all the way to the left, so I put the old one back on and everything is good to go now. Thanks for all the info!
