I've never done it before, and thinking about tackling it... Is it easy? Or are the hog rings as much of a PITA as I've been told by people? Is it worth spending the 50 bucks or whatever to have it professionally done? Thanks!

I just did this on my 79. The hog rings aren't the hard part, it's stretching the new cover to fit properly without tearing a seam. I've replaced seats covers in two different vehicles and if you can get someone to do it for 50 bucks I say go for it.

its pretty easy. i did one on my 85, you have to take the back off the base to get the cover on. but is easy to get it off. i had more trouble taking the old cover off than i did putting the new cover on. just make sure the cover is at room temp before you put it on, especially if its vinyl

Okay, cash is a little tight right now, so maybe I will try it myself... Maybe even get the wife involved! Won't she be happy....!!!

LOL, my wife helped me and it only took us a few hours with alot of breaks. Also, you can use a hair dryer to heat up the vinyl which makes it easier to stretch.

If you can have it professionally done for $50.00 go for it to install a cover on a bench here in AZ its about $120.00 from a reputable shop.

I just threw that 50 dollar price out there... I haven't actually called around yet. Thanks for all of your input and I'll be sure to post before and after pics when it's done!

If you are going to do it yourself take some pictures during disassembly for reference. If there is rust on the frame be sure to get as much off as possible (paint the frame if you can). Check the spring bed for any damaged springs or wires. Replace as necessary. It's also a good idea to add a layer of foam at this point to beef up the old cushions. Put the new upholstery in the cloths dryer for a while to soften it up (makes it easier to pull around the frames). Reassembly is pretty straight forward, refer to your pictures if needed. :thumbs:

I did one myself as well... warming it up helps a ton as well as flipping the back inside out and rolling it on, that works good rather than trying to yank it all the way down.

I got it from Brothers... It's an 82 and I went with the vinyl with velour inserts... The stock seat was all velour.. Thanks for the tips people!!! Keep them coming if you have more!!
