most miles on a square body

well guys my 77 cracked 210,000 miles today and i was wondering what set up yall have and how many miles you have on it. my 77 has the orignal engine(never been tore down past the valve covers), clutch, transmission, rear end, and all orignal suspention components.

Re: most miles on a square body

My 84 has turned over twice and I presently show around 26,780 on the odometer. It is the one in the avatar. It is definitely the original engine, though. We changed that out a long time ago and then broke the newer engine.

Re: most miles on a square body

Ive had one that the odometer had been rolled over so many time the numbers didnt line up and the 1's and 10's landed about half way between the sight window and the tenth of a mile one didnt turn any more

so if someone asked me how many miles were on it I'd just tell them "twice as meny as the space shuttle"

Re: most miles on a square body

Do kilometers count? lol,

I've got over 390,000km on the truck, about 290,000 as the second owner.

That's 241,800 total miles, 179,800 as the second owner since 1986. My Dad bought it for me when I was in high school and I've never sold it despite being once being tempted for a straight across trade on a 73 Super Duty Trans Am.

Not sure how many miles on the original motor as I pulled it in the 90s and replaced it with a GM Target Master 350 before I rebuilt the original and put it back in. The original TH350 is gone replaced by a TH700R4. The original rear diff is still there with nothing but oil changes and a new set of spider shafts and spider gears since new. I repacked the front wheel bearings once but last fall I put new ones in when I installed the drop spindles and shackle/hanger kits. In my teenage years I jumped it, bent it, abused it, straightened and painted it. Since then I've cared for it, loved it, hated it. I've driven the truck in 4 Canadian provinces and at least 9 American states since I've owned it. It's moved me from 2 colleges and 2 cities to where it sits today. The latest trip being a 2600 mile run to Iowa from Saskatchewan after sitting in the garage for almost 10 years without running. This truck has seen me through my first time, 2 marriages, 3 kids and 1 second childhood. My best friend growing up told me to never sell it because it was a classic just like a '57 Chevy. Sadly he was killed in a car crash just weeks after telling me that. I'm not sure whether what he told me prompted me to keep it this long or if it's just because these trucks are just that much fun. But he was very right, these trucks are classics. I had a choice in '93 whether to sell my '87 Monte Carlo SS or my '81. I sold the Monte and have regretted it since, but not near as much as if I had sold my square.

Sorry to wax nostalgic on you guys. Maybe because it's New Years, but it's very easy to get attached to the squares!

I've rolled my '87 over once since I've had it, bought it in the summer of '02 right outta high school. It was showing 45k on it then, and I reckon it had rolled over at least once. I pulled the motor this summer after putting 110k on it in eight years.

Around 1990 I worked in a quick lube shop, we used to have this old Suburban come in, probably a 79-80 iirc. So it wasnt actually that old back then..Looked old, was three different colors, rusty and even the dents had dents. But last I knew it had over 350k on a 350 th350.
Friend of mine has a 72 Chevelle 454SS 454/th400 with over 250k on it. Not a daily driver, but he drives it all summer long, owned it since new. Could still take home trophys too.

No idea. says 53k, but I'm sure it's rolled a few times.

Have a hard time believing that old chev going over 2million miles. Guess it's possible, but still hard to believe.

I've only owned my '76 for a little over a year, but its at 299,XXX right now (believed to have been an old DOT truck). Odometer stopped working around 290,000 and had to replace it but kept record of the mileage. Not the original engine (350 from a 73/74 Monte), but original manual trans, transfer case, and differentials.

I don't know about the rest of y'all, but something about a Chevy ad always makes me feel a little more proud of being an American.

My 86 has only 40,446 miles on it now. It has had the 305 replaced with a 350. My dad had bad luck with the first engine as it smoked soon after he bought it. Got a new crate engine and have had zero problems with it since 2004. My pops bought it in 1991.

Re: most miles on a square body

okay, it may be true, but that would be about 200 miles driving each day, every day, 365 days a year for more than 30 years. That's a hell of a lot of driving. Not saying it's not true just that it's hard for me to believe a person.

Ditto on the Chevy adds. I've always loved chev trucks, nothing against ford really... well, every one I've ever owned has been a POS but probably more because they weren't maintained really well. I wouldn't want another one, that's for sure. Maybe if it was pre-1980.

Bought mine in 88 at 150,000, she now has 476,000. Did a body off restoration on it 2 years ago. Eng is origional except for cylinder heads. Pic and what went into the restore is in here someplace. Have over $14,000 invested, but it's worth every penny to me. You can't buy dependability like this anymore. Alternators go, starters go, carbs crap out from time to time and other stuff just wears out, but for my money I'll take an old square any day of the week. jim

Just to show the world that "Squares" don't die, we drove ours on the Hot Rod Power Tour, this last year. We did 3000 miles round trip (Kansas to Newton, Iowa to Mobile, Alabama with the trip back to Kansas) and the truck made it with only one small failure and I repaired it on the road.
