Hey guys,
I found a 1/2t rear end out of an 86 or 89 that is a 3.73 and a factory posi. Will it bolt in to my 70 K10? What kind of posi is it? It doesn't look like the gov-lock I used to have.

Are you talking about the whole housing? or just the carrier?

If it is the housing, I would say that you are as well equipped to asnwer that as anyone else. You need to measure the over-all length drum to drum and then check the spring pad spacing....after that may depend upon your fab-skills. If the length is close, you might still have to move spring mounts and/or shock mounts.

As far as the "posi", it looks like a typical clutch type unit, but I don't recognize that spring right off. Eaton units have a pair of flat plates with coil springs. The only thing I have ever seen with a flat S-curve spring like that was Ford?

The S spring clutch type limited slip is common to the 8.5" 10 bolts. That's what a Camaro/Firebird posi looks like from '71-'81. I have seen them with 28 spline axles, but never in the 30 spline ones. It is a good, strong, rebuildable unit. But that is not just a "bolt-in" for an earlier truck. Will need spring perches & shock mounts re-welded and possibly an adapter u-joint depending on the yoke style used.

Do you think its worth $250? Moving perches and shock tabs isn't a big deal.

I'd say a complete rear with posi is worth $250. What ratio is it? Does it match what you have?

I decided to put the search for 3.73 posi rear end on the backburner and started looking for a frame since mine is beat to hell and has a hideous bumper welded on the front. I found a 69 c10 with a descent bed and nose for $250. Today I pulled the cover off the rear end and guess what I found.

A 3.73 posi:metal: am I seeing that right? That is a posi right? Any idea what kind?

Anybody familiar with these units? Any issues? Are the rebuildable?

That is the factory Eaton style posi-traction, and it is completely rebuildable. Although parts are expensive. I put new clutch plates in one of mine, but chances are it will be OK as is for now.

That S spring posi is also rebuildable, and $250 was not unreasonable IMO if it was in good shape.
