Would like to see the way some lift the cab
 

I got an idea for lifting the cab, and would like to see how others do it. It's going to be awhile till I get that far.

I added some end caps to stop the cab from sliding. It worked great. Embarassed to say this but I think I lifted the cab on and off about 20 times with 2 different cabs......uuuugh!!!! Once you find the center point of the cab, its a snap. I never had any issues of cab sliding or moving around. It made moving the cab around very very easy.

I usually just have a bowl or two of Wheaties and just sit it where I need it.:smoke:

#2 Rhodog77, that was the idea I had .
When using straps not only are they overloaded (unless they are very large) but pull on the gutters as well.
Thank you sir for posting that.
I also thought about fabbing a metal rig to mount to the original mount holes and lift through the door. But lifting on the door sills is the way the factory did it.
This is definatly the best way to go.
A person could use a gantry set up but should still have a beam going through the door sills, and then lift with 2 hoists, one on each side. I hope everyone that is going to lift a cab checks this thread out.

Suggestion: On those boards that are vertical and pin to the hoist, you should add diagonal braces makes it a bit stronger and sturdier. Also 3/8, or so bolts for saftey, the cab is about a 600 lb item I think. Kinda like lifting an engine.

Not a Chevy in the photo but the van was being decapitated with the help of my gantry and chain hoist. I have a cherry picker (it can be seen in the photo lifting the front of the roof but I don't have any concrete to roll it on.

I plan on building a setup like rhodog77 did though as that appears to work quite well.

just a word of advice if you build a wooden jig. When you lift the cab, make sure that you place the jig directly on the cab frame and not the door frames. If you leave the doors shut and lift the entire cab, that puts a lot of pressure on the doors frame. it could possible bend the doors up. I lifted mine with the doors on and closed with no issues but mine was a mockup cab so I wasnt really worried about it. I mounted my good cab without the doors installed. Just my 2 cents. Also dicer makes a good point about extra bracing. Here is another pix of the jig, you can see it has 2 vertical legs. I braced in between those with scrap 2x4's. I also add a small piece of metal pipe to slid into the hole of each leg that the hoist bolt slid thru. It seemed to help when I mounted the jig to the engine hoist as well. Im sure that there a thousand ways to do this but this was simple, it worked and best of all it was made of free scrap wood. I didnt have a single penny in the whole thing.

Yes you never want to lift that way with the doors on. Notice the photo in the #5 page I think its labeled 15

Your idea has made my list of all time favorite tools. I'll be building a copy to move my '50 cab when the time comes. The best part will be not having to pester 4 or 5 friends to help.

glad to help anyone on this site with tips, tricks and ideas but got to be honest, the basic design of the jig that I used was someone else's idea here on the forum. There are some great members on this forum, all willing to help and share as much as possible. Thats why I stay here!!!!

Here's my lifter I built years ago based on one I saw at a swap meet, I've lifted many cabs with it over the years. Makes it a one man job. Cab Lifter The best part is the pin that stays on my crane so I can just grab the rest and set it on when I need it.
