Trans question

I have a Saginaw 4 speed I pulled out of a 1964 C10 and was told it was out of a Camero. Does anyone know where to find what GM cars came with this trans? I done some surfing with no luck.

Re: Trans question

It came in a bunch of gm cars. From chevettes to monzas to novas to camaros. Generally in the 75 to 82 year range. There are different 1st gear ratios available. From 3.42 to 2.88 IIRC. Can't remember but the number of rings on the input shaft told you what the 1st gear ratio was.

Re: Trans question

Do you know why some GM's came with Saginaw and others Muncie?
These seem like dumb questions but I thought GM all came with Muncies and then I find this Saginaw and it surprised me.

Re: Trans question

as far as i know, there has been no rhyme or reason as to why one car got a saginaw, muncie or a borg warner t-10. it was prolly economics. the gm trucks also got a new process 4 speed from the dodge cars that had one gear turned around to make it a 3 spd o/d. mostly 6.2 diesels. having said that, as years went on, the shift from close ratio to wide ratio took place as car makers were trying to get mileage numbers up. these were the "pre o/d" days. i have a t-10 with a 2.46 1st gear from a '69 malibu. my buds '73 camaro has a t-10 from the factory. the matching of tire size, rear axle ratio & 1st gear ratio is very important to the launching of the vehicle. if you were to use my saginaw with 3.11 1st gear with a 3.73 or 4.10 axle then 1st gear won't get you a truck length before you have to shift. and wide ratios kinda throw you on the dash during shifts. that saganaw with 3.11 1st will dig in front of a 2.73 axle, but they will not tolerate any aggressive driving. 4 speeds are dinosaur transmissions in a modern age without o/d, but they are still a lot of fun to drive!
