400 sbc much heavier than 305?!?

Hi guys,

I just got my '86 C10 swb delivered tohether with a couple of other cars.
The shipping weight really shocked me! close to 4900 pounds!!!

The truck is a 2 wheel drive '86 silverado with a 400 sbc / 700R4 trans.
Dual saddle tanks, a/c, power windows, locks, bench seat, steel cowl hood, checkmate fx bed cover.
no spare, no jack.

I would have thought it would weigh around 4.100 to 4300 pounds.

So where is this extra weight?
The 400 sbc that much heavier than a 305?
Or is it somewhere else?

i dont see how the 400 could be any heavier at all . . . they r both small blocks with the same basic parts

Didn't think is the engine either...

But it's a lot more weight than I expected.
The bedcover is like 75 or so.....

Re: 400 sbc much heavier than 305?!?

I'm still not sure about it, but a friend of mine told me the shipping weights on those cargo bills were just rough estimates.

This was the list and the weight of each car;

'86 swb Chevy 400 4900 pounds
'68 Mustang 289 2660 pounds
'67 Cougar 289 2860 pounds
'71 Firebird 400 3750 pounds
'77 MonteCarlo 350 3500 pounds

Looking at this it does seem impossible that a '71 Firebird Formula 400 {pre '73 crash impact standards) with a fibreglass hood weighs more than a big fat '77 Monte Carlo midsize with all power moonroof, locks, windows etc.

Also a '67 Mercury Cougar Dan Gurney Special with hide-aways should be a heck of a lot heavier than a '68 Mustang. Not just 200 pounds more....

So I'll weigh my truck before I pursue this weight issue any further.
