Bags in place of coils ? 68 Burban. What Bags

I see that ECE sells a air ride kit for trucks and burbs. I would like to put somthing like this in place of the rear coils. So I roll low and still tow a car trailer. I dont think I am going to notch it because I am worried about the strength.............. just put in a 1/2 bump stop on the frame.

I see that Air lift has a small compressor kit looks neat and small would it work oky ?

So what bags should I use besides the ECE kit ?

Panhard bar ?

I have looked at the KP kit with the notch and truck arm kit it looks really neat but would it still be as strong as a Factory frame ? I would love to go this route but I need to be able to tow.

Once you swap over from coils to bags, I would recommend a trac-bar upgrade as well.

Are you planning on doing the front as well? or just the rear at this time?

I will do the front in time. I need to sell my 67 short box first.

Re: Bags in place of coils ? 68 Burban. What Bags

If you plan on doing the front at a later date, then you may want to hold off on an air management (compressor, valves, tank, etc.). You can run the rear on a schrader system that can be inflated with a shop compressor when it's time to tow, and left at "just the right height" when you're not. :)

Re: Bags in place of coils ? 68 Burban. What Bags

I would start with a 2600# bag of your choice. Slam Specialties RE7s are good stuff, as are Dominators and Firestones, but there are tons of choices out there.

There is a write-up in FAQ about how to convert from coils to bags without using any of the fancy, unnecessary mounting bracketry found in the aftermarket 'kits'.

The bolt-in notches have been found to be plenty strong for towing, especially if welded in for insurance. Many people on the board have done it, myself included. A button bump-stop would probably be sufficient at only 5" drop though.

Full length panhard bar, ala ECE or CPP will suit your needs, and are adjustable.

Don't feel bad, I couldn't either. :smoke:

I know there are a lot of great write ups on here because I used one last time.

And my intelligence is again questioned because I don't see a coil to bags thread in the Suspension and Steering FAQ section.

That is an awesome list, and yet not a single thread from here.

My comment was more to the point that there are many great build threads with pictures that I used to be able to find but somehow can't and none of them are in the FAQ section. Hell, gringoloco's dropmember build was one that I can't find now.

Sorry,... I was trying to satisfy you guys until I got home.
I couldn't find the FAQ "coils to bags" specific article.
I don't even remember one.

I did my search on the internet in about 5 minutes with DSL at work.
I have dial-up at home.
So I won't be much help.

There are a bunch of member that want these threads.
I'll do some looking,... but you guys have to help me.

Better yet,... do a tech article of your own,...when you bag your own trucks.
See how much of a PITA that is.
That's why I commend people like Rokcrln,... that has the patience to do what he does.

I'll keep looking on here.
But the internet and Google is a great source also.

I like using a RE-7 or SS-7 Slam Specialties bag,... bolted directly in place of the coil spring.
Use a 3/8"x4" bolt with a HD washer thru the trailing arm.
Drill 2 mounting holes and 1 large air fitting hole in the frame, to mount the upper end of the bag.
Run two lines with two schraders for the time being.

Found it! It was under Krue's index thread...

MrShelley's guide shows the basics. Feel free to ask any questions you might still have after reading through it. I have done three trucks, my '70 and two friends '65-'66s, exactly like this with excellent results.

Good advice here. Crank snout/harmonic balancer washers work well for the long 3/8 bolts.

You can also use a cheap in-line ball valve so that you only have one schrader. Open when filling, so that the truck is level, then close to prevent side-to-side transfer, extreme body roll, and scary handling.

Ok I see alot of diffirent bags out here. The ones the erly classics show are huge. What is a RE7 vs SS7. The bags look to basically bolt in. but what ones ?

I am going to need a super track bar kit. Is there a better option ?

SCOTI will your shock mount mod work here with some shorter shocks ?

The air line are pretty easy I undestand all that for now.

Yes. Prob won't even need shorter shocks, just OE replacement length.
