NV4500/NP205 Swap

A buddy of mine has a 78 1/2 4x4 and wants to swap in a NV4500. I'm just wondering what's needed to complete the swap? Will the 205 bolt up? He is running a SM465 now.

This would be a good read and it should answer your questions.

Re: NV4500/NP205 Swap

The 205 will not bolt up. A GM NV4500 has a 32 spline output shaft and a 6 hole, round mounting pattern. There are 32 spline 205 TCs out there but there are extremely hard to come by. A much easier way to go is to get an NP208 out of a mid to late 80s 4x4 equipped with a SM465 tranny. The NP208 is an aluminum case, chain driven TC. Not as heavy duty as the 205 but it will perform under normal conditions. The 208 TCs that came behind the SM465 transmissions are a 32 spline and have the correct mounting pattern. These TCs will mount DIRECTLY to a GM NV4500. You will even be able to use the crossmember and transmission mount from 80s truck originally equipped with the NP208 by merely drilling a couple new mounting holes in the frame. You can get a bellhousing that will allow you to keep your mechanical clutch linkage for about $400 bucks, otherwise you'll have to use a hydraulic clutch set-up and retain the internal hydraulic slave.
