How to run you throttle cable?
 

I havent been able the solve my problem that the car seems to be idleling a little high when I slowly release the throttle. When I release it quickly or when I kick the pedal when it idles high, it will go down to normal idle.

I have tried almost everything and I was tipped by someone that the path of my cable could be causing it.

this is how it runs. It has a very tight bend in it, which might cause it not release all the way.

how do the cables run in the engine bays of you guys? pictures please...

i think you are ok as far as cable routing; The high idle may be caused by something else.

I really don't believe that's too much bend, What I think is after so long the inner cable wears a groove into the inside of the plastic housing at the bends. This causes more drag on the inner cable.

I see the same thing daily on push mower stop cables, The fix is to replace them.....

a new cable can be a big improvement
on mine I was having the same problem then I put a new cable on and it was worst but after playing with it I figured out my bracket at the intake/carb was bent enough to make the cable almost kink really hard to see

I had modified my braket for a diferent intake and risers so once I cut it up again and rewelded it its lots better

kikkegk it looks like you have a binding spot right at the crimp on the cable at the bracket and that can be enough to hold it open

get your throttle stuck at it spot then grab the cable behind the crimp and straiten it out and see what happens

Are you using a dual return spring setup? If not, you should.

Pig Rig, I checked the cable, but it seems fine from the outside. I probably wanna replace it, since I can not look inside of it.

I had this same problem when I had my fast Idle screw turned too far out. I had to reach down and pull the pedal back up. Have you adjusted it lately

I had same prob w/ mine on my 87. It felt too stiff,but when detached from the tbi & pulled on, it felt okay. Figured it was shot. I got a new one from NAPA. Opened the new one & It seemed way too long, but was the same length as the original. Went back & my parts guy found a shorter one. I routed it the same way you have yours & there has been no problems at all. Try getting a shorter cable.

when I started having this problem, was after I had set the timing of the ignition from 0 BTDC to 11 BTDC (I use LPG, not gasoline, this has a bigger initial timing).

I then used the screw in the picture below to turn down the idle, but this made no difference. Thats when I noticed that the throttle wasn't fully released when letting go of the gaspedal slowly.

It sounds like the fast idle cam is trying to hold it open just a little bit and then when your pulling back on the throttle it falls off it. next time it does this too you try just blipping the throttle a little bit and see if it comes back down to regular idle.

OK, Try this..... When the idle sticks higher than normal grab the exposed steel wire part of the cable there at the carb with your finger and thumb, See if you can move it up or down (check for free play). If you have free play the cable isn't the problem, Check the high idle cam weight on the other side of the carb for sticking.

If you grab the cable and it's tight with no free play the cable is sticking and is best replaced.

On my holley I just had the fast idle screw adjusted to far out because I didn't want the fast idle at all. But It had the opposite effect. It would hang the throttle up when I pressed the pedal Just a little bit, If I went further it would go back to regular idle. I don't know if the problem was the adjustment that I had or if maybe the cam was sticking like the other guy mentioned above but turning the screw in a little further fixed it.

oke,
did some testing this weekend. When I remove the cable. The throttle has no more problem. when releasing very slowly it will always go back to normal idle.

I checked the cable and it seems to run pretty easy, but then again, this is my first Burb and I have no reference on how smooth this should be. I do notice that the initial friction to start moving the cable is not that smooth. so I am guessing, that when the throttle is almost at idle, there isnt too much tension in the springs anymore. and the little extra friction in the cable is just enough to hold it from completely returning...man...

I tried to lube it a little by blowing some WD40 up the hose from the inside of the car and engine bay. it seems a little better...

Maybe I should just replace the cable. How do I remove the cable from the black bracket at the right in this picture?

To get the cable out just squeeze the tabs that hold it in with some pliers and then push it out.

Solved the high throttle.

I took the springs apart en attached one to the opposite direction. Now the force of the two springs is evenly directed on the carb from both directions. The high throttle is gone.

When it is warmer over here, I'll make a nice solution. But for now, this solved it!!

they were black until I cleaned them with brake cleaner, hahahaha
