ford nine inch ?
 

Just wondering how many you guy running a ford 9 inch? I just got one for my lowered half ton that i was going to put in, I figured it would be the prefect time scene i broke the u-joint the other week. What all will i need on this swap? This truck is also getting a one piece drive shaft made for it too.

You will need to move the perches, also get wheels for it, ford are what 5 on 5.5" and chevys are 5 on 5" am i right? or get custom axle shafts from Currie

where are you getting the d-shaft from? couse of the tranny yoke issue.

as for the brakes i dont know its drums right, i would see any big deals there minor plumbing thats all but the emergency brake will be tricky.

Depending on what he got it out of some fords came with 5 on 5 also

Just find you a 14-bolt semi-floater from an early 90's Chevy truck. 33 splines and a much better gov-lock than the 10-bolts. And they're Chevy.
Why replace the rearend if all you're doing is breaking U-joints? You'll do that with a 9", too!

i'll have to get the details on the lugs, As far as the drive shaft goes, there is a guy that live about 10 miles down the road from me that makes drive shaft heard he is pretty good guess i'll see. The reason i want to do this 9 in is for the gearing, my truck i believe has 3:08 i think it was a straight 6 and the three on the column truck. if i'm not mistaken the ford is a 3:55?

Why not put gears in it as the old axle??

Well then just see whats best

9"
Axle shafts will be around $180-250 a set pluss lug stud or new rear wheels depending.
adapt the braking system
convertion u joint
cut and weld the leaf spring perches
parts for a 9" are more expensive compared to the chevy axles

Old axle
new gears wich with luck you could get cheap and while you are at it service the whole thing with new bearings and seals.

Now let me ask you this how did you breake the u-joint??? cant you just get a good quality one.

Now if you are drag racing or going through new rear tires every so often the i would say put the 9"

well i got the 9 in for free, that was the reason i was going to to do this swap, i just want to know what it all involved, but i think i'm going to keep the rear i got and put some gears in it.

The Ford could have anything, they're not all 3.55. Double check the tag, it would still be a good idea to pull the pumpkin and check the gears and carrier.

Yep.... 3.00's & were a popular option in F#*d rearends. It would suck to do the work required to swap only to have even less gear.
