Parts for my 72
 

Ok, so I'm pretty new here and never posted before. I may be in the wrong place so somebody help me out please?!

I've got a 72 3/4 ton 4x4 that's fully restored. It's a 350/4 speed combo and I've got it in the shop putting a new clutch in it. In the process, found that the cast support between the transmission and transfer case has been broken. It wouldn't be such a problem but it's been brazed before and developed a crack just beside it and another further away.

Is there any company that may reproduce this? I'm striking out at all the local salvage yards. I've checked LMC, Brothers, Classic Industries, and Classic Parts with no luck. I've been told that it's a '70-'72 specific piece but a 1/2 ton may work for a 3/4 ton as long as it's a manual.

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!

If nothing else does someone have a book with a part number I could use? I don't have a whole lot of literature on my '72, mainly just my '68 1/2 ton 2wd. Thanks!!

any chevy/gmc with the 465/205 combo will work. 70-80s-not sure exact year GM stopped using this combo.if no-one here can help try calling (510)651-5874 and talk with Bill.

Better not to assume anything, You need to know what model transmossion and transfer case you have.

I agree completely...the old saying about "don't assume....it makes an ass..." seems to ring true every time! I called my dad and asked him about the '72 and it's still got the factory running gear in it that was in it new. I won't be able to get ahold of my local mechanic back home working on it until tomorrow so I suppose I should hold off on ordering anything, huh?

The piece you are talking about is called a transmission to transfercase adapter. As recently as 5 or so years ago I was able to purchase the adapter for my truck right over the counter at my local Chevy dealer. However my adapter was for the NP205 to th350. All the adapters are different and are specific to the combo.

My father-in-law has an 85 or so 3/4 ton pickup. I'm not sure what specific 4-speed transmission he has but it for sure has a NP205 so you MIGHT be in luck buying new.

I don't admire the job you have in front of you. Those are some heavy pieces you are talking about.

On my adapter there are oil seals on each end that the coupler rides around on. They keep the tranny fluid in the th350 and the gear oil in the transfer case. Because I didn't want to go back I got a new coupler too. I'm not sure on the 4-speeds but you may want to investigate and consider that too.

One more thing as long as I'm data dumping on 1972 transfer case adapters...
GM made all transmission/transfercase combos in 1972 the same length by having different lengths of adapters. Long story short, if you want to ditch the 4-speed for a th350, you can make the swap without any other changes. The driveshafts on all 1972s are the same length and all use the same crossmember under there. HOWEVER to do the swap you need to get a complete combo. For some reason the manual transmissions had 10-spline output shafts and therefore the NP205 has 10 splines on its input shaft. The th350 has 28 splines on its output shaft and needs to be coupled to an input shaft with 28 splines.
