Project 82

ok well im finialy getting my motor together for my 82 swb. its been a long time comming from no money. to money and no place or time to even work on it. i had lived out of town for a while and had living expencises im sure yall know the drill.

so last few days ive been getting my parts together and all the good stuff. my dad ask me what color i wanted my pick up. and i told him i was not ready to paint it yet. ive got to get a new fender an do some door work and what not. so i told him to help me get the motor in and getting it running again. so he said ok he whould do that for me.

so its an 82 chevy short bed samge age as me yay!!

ive got a 400sb thats had some work done to it bored 60 over sonic checked all that stuff said it was good to go. the heads are milled 10 thousandths and the crank has been turned 20 over. i also have a 480 lift lunati bracket master II cam. and an edlebrock rpm preformer intake manifold. im going to rekit my holley 650 and clean it up i think it will work fine.
ill grab some pics of the motor tomorrow. i think were going to put the heads on tomorrow an all that good stuff

here is a quick pick of the pick up

Re: Project 82

ok im kind of puzzled and worried about a few things here. and im hoping maybe someone can help me out.

im worried my compression is going to be very high and maybe not good for the street.
on my 400 because of the headwork and pistons i have. basicly what i have is Sealed Power pistons made by federal mogul. they are 400np .060 over size point 2 22 from top of the head the minumum cleaners is 001. skirt size is 4 18375 +/- 0.00025 inches

now my heads are milled .020 thousandths and the pistons look like this
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SL...n/?prefilter=0

the block is bored 60 and its been checked and all that and the crank is turned 20 over

this is just one of the things thats buggin me im worried about compresion

Re: Project 82

well it got cold ive been a victim of identity theft over the holidays. so its all back on hold again. now im thinking of just selling the 400 that i have my doubts about. and the 350 thats 40 over. and strating a fresh engine build. something like a 383 which is what i really wanted an should have done.

notyo_cheez 02-12-2012 09:14 PM

Re: Project 82

A 383 can be streetable but impractical for a daily driver, if that's what you have planned for it. Strokers give you that low-end torque you want for quarter-mile runs, but if you are using it for street driving it's a waste. Really the best decision is how you are going to use it and not for bragging rights. It's up to you, just my $0.02...

You can go the LS1 resto-mod route if your budget allows for it and have the benefit of more horsepower and better fuel economy, with overdrive and higher gears out back too. Or, if you're on a budget like I am go for a pedestrian crate 4-bolt 350 with a THM350 drive train and shift kit.

CrazyJesster 02-12-2012 09:19 PM

Re: Project 82

ive got a dd so the mpg isnt a need for this one.

i wish my budget would allow for an ls build heh but the.
junkyard ls engines around here are higher than a cats back.

i think id be happy with a nice 383 vortec heads an good 700r4

383's can be practical & streetable for day to day

Re: Project 82

with some fabracation and some work would bucket seats out of a 97 suburban fit in the squares?

notyo_cheez 02-16-2012 12:21 PM

Re: Project 82

If you have and can use a MIG rig, plazma cutter and BFH you can do anything. It's all up to your resources and level of commitment.

I took the floor brackets from my 81, a couple pieces of unistrut and a bench pulled from a 93 and made it fit. For buckets you'll need to get two pair of brackets and either fab a raised right side floor mount or cut one from a Suburban or Blazer with buckets, and tack that to the floor. You probably won't be able to modify the OEM brackets from the '97 seats to fit the '82 cab floor, the seat will be too high as the '82 cab floor has the raised section and the '97 is flat.

Easy route, find a pair of buckets and console from a '91 and scavenge the middle raised floor pieces. If you go this route you won't be able to fold the seat backs forward if that's important to you.

Re: Project 82

thanks

there is a guy thats offered to sell me his 97 suburban tranny is bad.
its got leather buckets and console and a vortec 350.
i could use the motor an the buckets in my 82 i have.
i have not bought this rig yet just was trying to do some reasearch with the seats.
i know the motor will fit no problem id have to get a nother 4l60e or use my turbo 350

Re: Project 82

well i did get my 400 sold guy will pick it up monday.
the funding will be a good start on a 383 stroker build.
now im locating a good 350 virgin block 4 bolt main.
im looking into dart shp aluminum heads 72cc.
i have not decided on them yet however.
im also looking into RHS pro torkers as well they are 64 cc.
i would really like the 9.1 compression though.
