Why did some 8 foot bed trucks have 16 gallon fuel tank instead of 20 gallon?
I have a 1984 GMC 3500 Sierra 2wd single rear wheels, single fuel tank Pickup. My dad bought it brand new in 1984 as a weekend work truck.
It doesnt have AC, power locks/windows/carpet/dome light/spare tire, etc. Very few options- 4.11 gears/350 engine-4 bolt main/extra leaf springs/HD Tranny. Why did some 8 foot bed trucks get a 16 gallon fuel tank and others get the 20 gallon tank? http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...g?t=1295706851 |

My guess would be the frame setup used was optioned for twin tanks but since you dad just wanted a single then they removed one from an already fitted frame at the factory. Just a guess though.

My dad bought the truck off the lot of a GMC Truck dealership in the Bronx. He did not special order the truck.

im guessing that 16 gallon was standard and 20 was an option? you may want to PM Keith Seymour for that he was one of the guys that designed /built em

Truck should have came with a 20 gallon tank not a 16, see spec book for stds.
The book is for 1984 models, I'd have to look up the 1974. |

Truck is at the shop now but Im going to measure te size of the tank.
I think its a 16 gallon bc of the fuel receipt from service station but i dont know if the gas gauge is 100% accurate. |

LMC also says this in there catalog, lists both tanks for LB trucks, and to measure. I guess it happend fairly often.

My 3/4T truck chassis was originally an 82. It's got dual 20 gallon tanks. The 83 1/2T I took the cab from years ago, had dual 16 gallon tanks..... It must have been an option, as to the size you wanted?
