12 bolt Help

Any idea's on getting the pinion shaft out, it moves some either way but not much, the shaft lock screw came out intact, what's the secret here

You removed the bolt that holds in the shaft. Remove the shaft. You will notice a C clip that holds in the axles. One for each axle...remove those and pull axles. Remove spider gears in the carrier assembly and take off the caps that hold the carrier bearings in place. Remove carrier and pay attention to any shims that are next to the carrier bearings...each side. Remove pinion shaft nut and yoke assembly and then you can remove the pinion shaft. This may be more than you want to do but these bearings are set to thousands in tolerances. Would be a good idea to study up on this job before you jump in.

My shaft came out fairly easily, but there are some ridges on it that took a little nudge to push through. I think you'd be safe to tap on it lightly with something to get it to push through. If you are just planning on pulling the axles, make sure not to rotate anything after you get the pin out, or the spider gears will fall out.

You can't drive the pin straight back it will hit you will need to rotate the carrier so that the pin comes out of the rear of the carrier at 2:00 o'clock location.

BFH...and a punch, the pin is tool steel so you are not going to hurt it

Well as you can see I used the BFH and got some movement, notice the broken brass punch (two) I'm at and angle so as not to bottom out and have got this far either way, maybe I need to move up to the BAFH, anyway I did get my upper control arms back together, and thanks for all the info.

you can use a steel punch, you wont harm the tool steel pin.

Keep doing what you're doing.
I hit them from the front a little @ a time. After each hit I rotate the differential making sure it clears (you don't want to knock it so far that you can't rotate the differential). Once it's as far as it can be pushed in w/o interfereing while rotating, rotate the differential 180° & use some channel locks or vice grips to pull it toward you the rest of the way through. Try, try, try, to not damage the outside edges of the pin if you plan to re-use it. |

Bob[/QUOT Thanks but the shop manual sec 4-22 says different Ive looked at pulling those clips out but limited access with that shaft in the way, Im going at it with the BAH and steel punch, got a nasty one off a tool truck |
