Need help with 62 1/2 ton 4x4 burb brakes
Hey everyone,
I just got a 62 with a 350 engine. Running great but stopping is horrible. Using all my leg strength to get it to stop. Very hard brakes and I feel like Fred Flintstone. Brakes were recently rebuilt but something is off. Took it to shop and they said everything seems good but I may need new drums and they need to double check the fit on the pads. I even considered going from drums to disc but since it is 4x4 4spd the parts are not really out there. Even Brothers could not help. They suggested looking into some NAPCO stuff online which is not in my budget. I am looking for either a place to get some new drums, pads and master cylinder or a conversion suggestion that won't kill my pocket. Thanks so much! That's NAPCO stuff, right? I never have understood why burbs were still NAPCO but pickups started using GM stuff in '60. My '61 is d44/12bolt/sm420/t221. You're going to need NAPCO experts on this, and I don't know how many are out there. IMHO it would be a damn shame to "convert" anything that is original NAPCO. That stuff is just rare and expensive as far as I know. It's a very cool burb, good luck with it. I'll bet the fix is easy, just may take some time and patience.

First off nice looking rig you got there.....sounds like your brakes may be out of adjustment...this sometimes can be cured by backing up and hitting the brakes hard...the back brakes should be self adjusting....second does the emergency brake work....if you put in on a few clicks and drive do you notice any change in the braking if so that would for sure tell me its an adjustment on the brakes....also how is the brake pedal ....is it going to the floor... can you lock up the brakes off roading also...a few thing to try out before spending some money...still a very nice looking rig

Just a confirmation I do not have anything NAPCO on here but since it is a 4X4 stick no one seems to have the right drums. The brakes do not go to the floor it hey are just really stiff and taking a long time to brake and it only happens by my own power. And the emergency brake works. I was also told there is a difference in the pads as well some 2 inch and some 2 and a half. I will try and run out and through it into reverse with a brake stomp.

LONG MOTOR CORPORATION aftermarket parts go online and lookup they will send you a free catalog but i would try to get brake drums and pads if you in fact need them from your local autoparts store

Good luck on the brakes and dont let anyone tell you to upgrade on the axles these trucks,suburbans are becoming rare with the original drivetrain

Check the flexible rubber lines first. They are bad about collapsing. They look good on the outside but the inside breaks down from prolonged exposure to the brake fluid. That blocks the flow of fluid.

J.Kirn is the man! Before I went out and bought anything today and did what you said and threw it into reverse twice and slammed on the brakes and presto! I have brakes! What is your address so I can send you the money I would have blown on new drums and pads!
