Changing out 2.73 gears for 3.42 gears

Found an 85' LWB with a set of 3.42 gears in the rear and HD brake opion. How hard is it going to be for me to remove the gears? I ran accross this yesterday but, didn't have the time to jack it up and try and remove them.

if you just want the gears i'd buy them new. unless youre gonna take the whole rear.

Can you buy the axle complete? Thats your best bet by far. By the time you take everything out of two axles and build your again, your better off starting with new gears.

I would like to do this as well, but I don't have access to a complete axle. Where do y'all suggest buying just the gears? Any idea on how much someone is going to charge me to replace them?

dont waste your money on some old gears.
1, they will wine and make noise becuase they are old and you will not get the same pattern as they came out
2, new gears range from 155-189 + new bearing master install kit ranging from 89-100.

if you cant afford new gears dont waste your money on some old worn gears, just save it till you can buy new. install ranges from 250 (bench job) - 275 in my area. If you bring them the truck its usually 100$ more.
