Front rally wheel clearence issue, need help..
Hey guys, so im having a problem with the newer style rally wheels I have. There is absolutely no clearence between some of the suspension and steering components causing bad rubbing issues up front. (I knew this would happen before I bought them)
I was wondering if like a 1/2" spacer would solve my problem. I tried grinding stuff down and didnt have any luck, its alot better then what it was but its still pretty bad I have to make 5 point turns it seems like. Im not driving the truck right now its at home in the garage, but I need to get this problem solved. Any help and ideas would be much appreciated! Thanks -Matt |

I know it can be corrected with spacers but I'm not sure what size you need.

Ya thats what I was thinking, hopefully someone will chime in. Really dont want to go over a 1/2" spacer though..

.500" is too much for a spacer; .250" is stretching the limitations of the studs in sheer strength.
When using 15's & drop spindles, you will need to trim the a-arm lip (heck, I had to trim even more for my 18's). Where exactly is the interference? |

The wheel clears the a-arms, its rubbing on the steering arms. Where they connect to the spindle.

You need 1" wheel spacers, or perhaps a better term is 5 on 5 to 5 on 5 1" wheel adapters. I had to run them on my 77 with the 88+ rally wheels. If you do a ebay searh for gjbargains, I got mine from him, high quality adapters, I was very happy with them. I ran 1.5" ones on the back to help eve out the track width.

Mine fit with no problems, I am assuming you have the 7" rallys?

Yes I have the 7" rallys, blah might just go for it. Its only money right

Re: Front rally wheel clearence issue, need help..
My only gripe was I had inner fender tire rub on big bumps and tight turning situations, but that was likely the 5.5 front drop.

Muthstryker,
Which spindles, springs and wheel backspacing? Pictures tell a thousand words. I'm very curious as I'm in the middle of working on mine. I haven't got it together yet but I have the 3.0" beltechs, cut one coil and 15x8 rallys (I'm guessing and older styel wheel 255x60 tire). I was thinking a .25" spacer to avoid trmming the control arm. However I have trimmed the lower control arm and I hope I didn't go too far. |

I have about the same setup 2 1/2 drop spindle and had no issues with the either of the 2 15x7's I put on , but I did cut my a arms a bit to try and fit the 15x8 ,does having the 1 1/4" rotors matter? maybe moves em out a 1/4" ?

Re: Front rally wheel clearence issue, need help..
Guys, the 88+ rallys are completely different than the 87 and dow rallys...backspacing wise.

Im going to try the 1" adapters, up front. The wheel will be super close but it might work. |
Re: Front rally wheel clearence issue, need help..
Anyone know the hub diameter of our trucks? I cant find it and I need to know so I can buy some hub centric rings for the truck

Re: Front rally wheel clearence issue, need help..
my 88+ rallys wouldn't even sit tight to the mating surface on the rotor, the center hole was smaller then the hub (and not round either)...and even if it fit (the rims were powdercoated too, that could be partially why), there would be no clearance between the lip and steering knuckle on the spindle. There was more than 3.5" of backspacing on the rims I had, because they did not fit properly...look at my pic above, the center is nearly flush with the rest of the rim.

I think im going to try and sell them, I really dont want to throw anymore money at trying to make these work. im already in to the wheels/tires/lugs/center caps just over $1000.. I cant justify spending more money on them just to have them removed in 6-7 months so I can throw my 22s on the truck. Live and learn I guess! They were kind of an impulse buy to begin with. |

Usually less than $100 for all four bare rims. Then transfer your tires, caps, lugnuts, and trim rings over to the 73-87 version. Sell the spacers. Sell the 88-98 wheels. Done. |
