Freon or 134?
My 84 K10 has lost it's charge. I was planning a serpintine swap anyway. I have rat holed about 60 oz of R12 back over the years. So I have enough to charge it at least once, if not twice. Which would you do:
New compressor, new hoses, reseal system, flush, vacuum, Charge with freon and hope for another 25 years or Sell Freon, New Compressor and parrallel flow condenser/ new hoses. fluch vacuum charge with 134???? I know it cools with R12, is the constant |

J, seeing as you are planning on changing the major components anyway, I would change it over to 134. Be aware the oil is different than R12 uses and if you get a new compressor you may need close to 10 OZ's in a brand new system. The R134 oil is called PAG oil. R12 oil and PAG oil are NOT compatable, SO, your going to have to change the reciever\drier and flush out the evaporator with brake clean followed by alcohol and then blow it dry with compressed air. I would change the drier and flush the evaporator no matter which path I took. jim

My system was converted a decade ago. The parts were in good shape so they just drained the r12 out installed an adapter and put r134 in. I haven't seen a problem with the oils coming in contact. It blows cold just not as cold as the r12. I was told a larger condensor fixes this. go with the 134.

I'd see if the leak was easy to find, fix it, and then just recharge it with my r-12 until it drained again in 25 years

I agree with all of the above statements. However, I like to use what I already have and I believe you can still get the R-12 oil, if needed, then finish off your supply. R-134 will never get as cold as R-12.

I'd use the 12, I have about 40 cans of 12.....left over from my old business.
