Is there a company that remakes license plates and VIN tags?
Anyone know if there is a company or if it's even legal to remake the stock license plates and VIN tags for our trucks? I have the old black/yellow plates but they are pretty rusty and beat. I wanted to find out if I could get a nice new shiny set w/ the same numbers remade. Also if someone could remake the VIN tag as it is a little damaged as well..
Thoughts? Thanks! |

I know the VIN tag can not be remade, I also would seriously doubt you can get remakes on your plates, even though it is perfectly understandable why you want to do this.

They say: Q: Can your replica country or USA State license plates be used legally? A: Autogeardepot.com, Inc. and licenseplates.tv market our replica license plates for non-official use only and may not replace officially/government issued license plates. But I don't think that's gonna stop me from running 'em, lol! |

I am calling the DMV tomorrow. I remember my brother redoing the plates on his bug years ago and got in trouble for it, but that was California. No idea what they will say, I just want to clean it up.

as for plates - they can be purchased at swap meets and stuff pretty easily - but they can't be run on the street legally. All one could really be used for is slappin em on once at a show (i.e. ON the fairgrounds) or as garage art. I bought a 65 CA black plate for the latter for a previous vehicle I had, but it never made it to the bumper... sadly.

Novelty plates are ok as long as not used for a vehicle, but doing anything with a VIN tag is against federal law and not allowed to be discussed per forum rules.

Last month I put a set of unrestored 1956 plates (with a 1962 tag) on my '62 C-10. The plates are very nice, but not NOS. I've done the same thing with most of my cars and trucks (1924 to 1962). You must have 2 matching plates. They can be restored or original. You must have a tag if your truck is a year that California didn't make new plate dies (like the '56 plates and '62 tag for my truck). They must be easy to read with no distortions, or significant paint loss, or significant rust, or fading. If in doubt, it probably wont fly at DMV. California DMV will be more than happy to make you jump through hoops and take your cash. An inexperienced clerk can make your life hell, but just know your facts and stick to your guns...ask for the supervisor. Original plates really add a great look...you'll love it! |

YOM actually includes through 1972 in California. Just spent 8 months wrestling with the DMV and dealing with the under informed clerks. But I finally got them on my truck and it is all legal. These were in pretty rough shape when i bought them at the swap meet but I completely restored them and the DMV did not have an issue with it.

Restoring your plates is actually not that difficult if you have at least one good plate to start with some of the necessary tools. The front one of mine was in pretty rough shape and this was my first attempt at something like this. Check out the whole process here;
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...icense+restore The vanity plates you can get from some of these sites could land you in real trouble if you use them on your truck, all it takes is a CHP with a chip on his shoulder and your screwed. They are OK for use at a show but not for actual use. you can also get tags on Ebay, some are replacas and others are originals. You want to find the original dealers, because the numbers do matter and the the guys that make the replaca stickers just use the same numbers over and over again. |

Found the CA DMV form for YOM plates..

Re: Is there a company that remakes license plates and VIN tags?
Thanks for the link, it seems repainted plates are ok, but I will verify that for daily use. Since my plates are original issue, I hope there won't be a problem.
Also, awesome write up, Mike. Your plates turned out great. |
Re: Is there a company that remakes license plates and VIN tags?
Great information guys!!!! Here in Michigan we can purchase plates for the year of the vehicle and register them at the Secretary of State and run them legally. If you choose this route you are not required to display a sticker on the plate. We are only required to have a rear plate here and you can put any type of plate on the front as you wish. I seen a truck the other day that had a vanity plate on the front that read (will trade wife for beer) I probably would'nt run that one myself. We also have a company that restores plates and the quality is awesome!!! I have a 65 NC plate on the front and a 1965 MI plate on the back of my truck and its legal.
