What trucks came with the 6 CYL, 4000 RPM Tach ?

I have a 4000 RPM six cylinder tach in a 67-68 cluster and wondered which trucks came with it as all of the others I have seen for sale are 5000 RPM. Thanks Randy

I wonder if the GMC V6's used that. PM Toomuchstuff (Eric), he may know.

Re: What trucks came with the 6 CYL, 4000 RPM Tach ?

The 6 cyl tachs were 5000 rpm tachs and look the same as the V-8 tachs. The only way to know is pull the cluster out and look on the back. The 4000 rpm tachs are from a diesel and are mechanical like the speedo hook up.
Post up a pic and i can let you know what you have...

I don't think I have seen that tach before with those holes for lights! Can you post a pic of the back of the tach?

OK, now I see, it is missing the outer case. If it is a 6cyl tach it should be a 5000rpm tach and someone has put a diesel 4000rpm lens on it.:chevy:

The picture is kind of dark but it looks like a 5000 rpm tach face to me! count your marks on the tach face

In the 3rd picture I posted is a faint stamping Prod Sample. It is disassembled with all of its gauges and tins. It is not mechanical or a 5000 RPM. Thanks everyone for your help. Randy

I'm sorry orange-orange but I'm calling you out on this one. The tach you have pictured is a 5000RPM tach according to the tach face in picture one. There are 10 sections on the tach face which equates to 5000rpms. Look at the picture I posted of the diesel tach and there are 8 section which is for 4000rpms:chevy:

all right, you win, but even though it might be the same face, (??? HELP ?) how would the RPM part of the tack calibrate to move slower to match the clear face plate. It is 4000. Also is the part number on my face plate the same as your 6 cyl diesels ? 6457908 empossed in the plastic. And 68265 are the last visable numbers on the circuit board of the tack (there are 2 numbers before that I would need to disassemble the tach to read ) Are these the same as a 5000 RPM tach ? ps....I don't blame you, I would call it too !

I have the same 4000rpm lens you have with 6457908 and also has a vacuum gauge on lens. I checked my 8cyl tach circuit board and it has the same number as you have on yours ending with 68265! Why do you think you have a 6 cyl tach? Is it on the back of the housing? It will say 8cyl or 6cyl. The diesel tach is not necessarily a 6cyl it is run off of the distributor

Re: What trucks came with the 6 CYL, 4000 RPM Tach ?

Yes, it has 6 cyl on the back tin. Thank you for checking your clusters parts. Is there any other parts of the tach that I can photo that can show a differences between a 6 cyl and an 8 cyl. I too thought it might be a diesel tach, but now I don't think so. I am trying to find its original correct application.

Re: What trucks came with the 6 CYL, 4000 RPM Tach ?

What you have is a 6 cyl electric tach head with a diesel lens. (i am just going by you said it was stamped 6 cyl)
I guess i should add that the correct application for the tach head would be a 67-72 inline or v-6. gas engine. The lens is for a deisel...

Re: What trucks came with the 6 CYL, 4000 RPM Tach ?

Thanks again to all of you who answered ! I guess I got a little wound up thinking Prod Sample might stand for Product Sample or Production Sample and I had some sort of one off or proto type cluster. again thanks you all.....Randy

Re: What trucks came with the 6 CYL, 4000 RPM Tach ?

Is it safe to assume the tach is the same for a V6 and I6?
