87 Rear Tail light issues -- Help
I purchased some new rear taillights for my 87 Chevy Stepside. The wiring must be all wrong since the brake light is now the reverse light and the running lights are not really bright.
I have three wires coming out of the bed... yellow, green and brown. The wires from the lights (purchased at Classicparts.com) Ones Brown, white, and red. Two are together and one is seperate. If any one can help me out with what wires go to what I would appreciate. I am looking for the wire id on the truck and I will figure out the lights. Thanks |
Re: 87 Rear Tail light issues -- Help
brown = tail lights
green = right turn yellow = left turn white = wire to common or chassis ground |

Can you tell me why I have the same Green, yellow, Brown on both sides? No white from the truck just lights. I am thinkg the driver side (yellow) is hooked up and the green is the ground? and the green is hooked up on psg side and the yellow would be ground? What about reverse lights? |

Thanks for the photos.
Looks like the photos are of a fleetside. Mine is a step with the external lights. I am narrowing it down... but I only have 3 wires from the truck and 3 wires from the lamp. |

This my sound dumb to ask, but is your turn signal cam working? Mine was broke and my wiring was messed up. I replaced it and it fixed my rear light problem. Just a suggestion.

Re: 87 Rear Tail light issues -- Help
If your taillight harness has been hacked this info is no good but the standard colors at your truck should be as follows.
Brown-----Tail Light Yellow-----Left Turn/Brake Dk Green---Right Turn/Brake Lt Green---Reverse Black------Ground Your new lights more than likely grounded through the mounts but with out pics of what lights you have IDK. This will leave you with one wire being tail, one being turn/brake, and one being reverse. If you have different colors you'll have to start some investigation with a test light. |

Would the single wire coming(green) out of the side of the bed below the two be the reverse light? I am assuming since I have no black that the original wires were grounded through the mount. Sorry to keep going around and aroung on this. Does anyone have photos of the correct stepside lighting? |
Re: 87 Rear Tail light issues -- Help
I would guess so. Get a test light, put her in reverse and she if you have power.
