77 GMC hood stripes?
 

Should a 77 GMC Sierra Classic have the stripes down each side of the hood? Was it an option or part of a trim package? I've seen them on the Silverado's. Pickup was repainted in the mid 80's and nobody in my family can remember if it had the stripes.

Thanks for the compliments guys, I wish it looked as good in person as it does in a picture. It’s sat outside since it was new so everything is faded, it’s straight but needs redone (inside and out) to get it looking new. It drives great and this spring it will have a little more zip, just rebuilt the tranny and waiting to install a 496.

When it gets redone it will look the same just better, I've liked the colors since I saw it new in 77. That being said it will be a few years before that project is started. I've got to get the drive train taken care of. Nothing crazy in the engine compartment, it's going to stay stock looking except for a few mods.

You may have had the hood stripes;the option code ZY5 would show on the spid and your hood(top and bottom) would be the same color as the side insert panels.If your hood is original look at the color on the underside;if it is the main body color you would not have had stripes;if it is the side panel color you would have had stripes

Looks like mine is ZY4 deluxe two tone paint. I checked under the hood as well and it's all yellow. Thanks for the help...this is a great site!

None that I am aware of, but they wouldn't be to hard to duplicate.

The best ones I have EVER seen were painted on with the base coat with the clear on top!

Beats the OEM decals that fade and dis-color....

I love truck with the ZY5 option cause there rare.

Examples of ZY5 option. Yellow Chevy and Blue GMC are 1978, Blue Chevy is 1977.

I like the yellow Chevy! When my grandpa bought the pickup new in 1977 it had that sytle of hubcap.

The hood stripes on the 79' and 80' are then changed different again to 3 narrower stripes, 79' 3 single decal stripes with slight spacing, and 80' one decal with all 3 side by side meeting at the fender,

instead of the 2 wide stripes with a space in the center like on the 77' and 78'

Here is an example in the pictures shown of the 79' & 80' hood stripes....

The Dark Carmine Red hood is OEM off a 79'

The Silver Hood is on a 80'

Hmm, my 79 truck has the zy5 package but has 1980 hood stripes and is the same red as your 79.

Maybe that's why, I have seen stuff like that happen where parts from different years have gotten blended when it's close to the change over at some plants.

For example, My 1980 C25 with 20,000 miles was built in October of 79' and has some mechanical items that GM told me were ended in the 79' model and changed in the 80' model.

One small item was the fuel lines and fuel pump ( the shape, and direction they face ) was changed in the 80' model. My Truck has the 79' fuel line and pump setup.

Very possible, but I do not know how to find out. The only thing I got from the vin was that it is a GMC, 2wd, 350 motor, 1/2 ton heavy duty, pickup, 79, from Janesville and the last numbers are 512145.

All the original paint trucks I have seen use the same stripes for 1979 and 1980...a 1 piece 3 color stripe.

The listing in the parts book is also the same for both years ..p/n 14006001 and 14006002.

The same stripe is used for ZY5 trucks and Z77 Chevy Sport.

But it is always possible that a certain plant could use something different.

First thing I would look for would be ZY5 on the SPID

Also the factory stripes were often not replaced by bodyshops because of cost ...and before the days of computer generated multi color stripes there was no economical way to reproduce the factory stripes.

I recently acquired a 1977 c10 with the bonanza and zy5 package , has anyone found a source since the posting of this thread? I have the Cordova brown and Bronze stripes on my hood. The Hood is the same color as the middle two tone color and the cab with the main body color being that dark brown. Ill post a picture soonish.

These days any shop that is doing wraps can do an excellent job of duplicating the stripe kit.You just need to give them some good photos of an original.

Still looking for a solution. Probably will just repain't and clear the hood.
