So i'm putting new exhaust on my '84. I'm pretty set on using 40 series flowmasters, i know some of you guys don't like em so here's your chance to talk me out of it. Also i know the flows will give me alot of interior resonance. I want to just dump the pipes before the rear axle. Will this make it even louder inside? would side exit before the rear tires be any better? For you 67-72 guys who don't have to run cats, since i'm going to run some after market cats won't these make the 40 series a little quiter than they are on your trucks?

low 84,

I run a single 40 series Flowmaster with a cat (blown out by accident http://67-72chevytrucks.com/board/ubbhtml/biggrin.gif). That one makes enough sound for me. Two would awsome. I can drive at highway speeds and the noise is not a problem. I hear more noise from the vent windows. At low speeds it sounds very nice. The loudest sound seems to be around 1100-1300 RPMs. Mine single dumps infront of the axel. The resonance at idle when parked sounds really good. If you use some sound killing material under the carpet and put some 12' thumpers behind the seat like me you wont hear a thing.

Yes, running a cat will quiet id down quite a bit. The wife wanted a flow master for her POS S-10 Blazer, and I got a 3 chainber thinkin you'd still be able to tell it was there...I know it's there, only becouse it cost so d@mn much.
One thing to think about, make sure there is plenty of space all around the muffs. Flowmasters have been known to cause fires being that they get so hot.

I had a 74 gmc with hooker comps, h-pipes and flowmasters dumped right after the muffler all 2.5". WOW what a rumble at low idle. It was awsome. Made you want to stomp on it. Set off car alarms inside parking garages all the time. The shop that installed the system told me to dump it was acually better. All the extra after the mufflers was only to get the fumes to the rear and caused restriction anyway. The only drawback was if you travel on dirt roads it really boils up the dust. So just a pair of turn downs are the best. The turn down helps to draw also from the air under the rig while your sailing down the hwy. This system upped my milage and power. Sold the truck back to the original owner and she prefers to drive this plane jane farm truck over her lincoln town car. And she is a tiny little 60yr old indian lady. Quite a truck.

Did y'all know that Flowmaster actually recommends you don't drump your exhaust after their mufflers!!! I'm changing mine once the 350 goes in. I think I'll do a straight pipe after the muffler with just a tad of dump.

Im going to put ramhorn 2.5's to true dual w/h-pipe to 40 series side exiting before the rear wheels with z28 style "vaccum" tips on my 79 with a vortec 350. I have 1 5/8" headers to true dual 2.5 w/h-pipe to 40 series then going all the way back to 4" [maybe 3 or 5, I really dont remember] megaphone tips on my 78 with a 383 and it sounds absolutly awsome. Not the extreme muscle car sound like flowmasters dumped, but at 6k this thing sounds EXACTLY like a NASCAR going by you on the track. Interior resonance is pretty bad though, even when I had a $2500 sterio in it.

other options for side exhaust or tips
 
check out www.spintechmufflers.com , and send for thier literature they have a virtual smorgusboard of mufflers, tips, and pipes, of all shapes and sizes, if they don't have what you want they will make it.

holy crap! i can't belive this post is still alive. i haven't been on this board in awhile. i posted this 4 months ago. the exhaust has been installed for a while and sounds great
