steering colunm question
From what I understand and from looking at the one I have from a 55 GMC, is that the steering colunm shaft and tube are press fit into the steering box. I was wondering if anyone has ever cut the tube.. shortend the shaft and sleaved the tube to make the whole thing shorter? or if the box and tube can be separated, modified and reassembled to make it shorter?
The reason I ask is that I have a guy who wants to buy my old truck parts for a retro gasser project and needs a shorter colunm like 25" vs the 40"+. I'm not the one going to do the work, I'm just curious as to if it is safely possible and if someone has done it? |

Thanks,
I did do a search but I guess I didn't use the right verbage. I knew the question must have been posed before |
Re: steering colunm question
I'm understanding from your post that he wants to shorten it and use the original attached box. If that's so then I think it would be fairly easy to cut an equal amount out of the column tube and the shaft, and weld them back together. There's room in the tube for a sleeve to strengthen the weld joint on the shaft.
