How fast do YOU think she will go ?
I have a '69 c10 lwb pick-up. It's completely gutted out. The truck is 90% stock. Stock suspension. Stock posi track rear end. Stock gears. The only thing not stock in it is the one racing seat and the 500 CI Caddy backed by a T400. The Caddy is all stock other than an aluminum intake, aluminum water pump, and a 750 Holley. Before I go out and decide to buy some horse power add on's and get banded for running to fast without proper safety, How fast do you think she will go?

Be sure to get some video.... Those Cadillac motors will scoot pretty good.

Re: How fast do YOU think she will go ?
with a stock caddy, I would say high 14's - low 15's. They have torque, but no horsepower
|
Re: How fast do YOU think she will go ?
I say mid to high 13's.

Mid 15s
|
Re: How fast do YOU think she will go ?
Mid 13s on slicks. Maybe 15s on regular tires.
|
Re: How fast do YOU think she will go ?
What rear gears do you have? What size are the tires? More than likely you are going to liquidate the tires so your 60' time will be horrible.

Re: How fast do YOU think she will go ?
Comp Cam, springs and an intake it will pick up a few ponies.:metal:

Re: How fast do YOU think she will go ?
So you guys are saying mid 13's. If I put some slicks on it and a 250 shot nos, would that put me in the high 12's?

Re: How fast do YOU think she will go ?
first off, mid 14's
the caddy 500 is all done at 4200 stock.. and those 40 y/o valve springs are not gonna help your cause.. and nos, on cast pistons.. yes it can be done, but.. I wouldn't ,inless you got the tune spot on.. I'd go with some advance spings and holley jets, and pump camps.. good luck.. |
Re: How fast do YOU think she will go ?
If a stock long block caddy puts that truck into the 13's, my engine should run 11's; and I'm pretty certain it won't.
Have to remember, stock 500's only made 200 horse in the mid 70's engines, 365 or so in the 71 and the 70 was like 400. Yes they made lots of torque (500ftlbs in the 70/71). So if you have a 70 or 71 then it could conceivably run low-mid 13's. If you don't, you'll be lucky to break into the 14's. Having said that, it is fairly easy to build a 400-450hp caddy with the stock heads and using a decent cam, even using cast pistons at 8:1 compression. 500hp isn't too far off either (see these specs) BTW, if you decide to get rid of it, let me know, I'll take it :) |
Re: How fast do YOU think she will go ?
It's a stock 1969 500 caddy. My grandpa once told me that they make like you said 400 horses, but he also said by just putting an aluminum intake on it, that alone will add 20 horses. True, or not true?
|
Re: How fast do YOU think she will go ?
I don't know for sure, but it's possible. The 365 and 400 horse motors had 10:1 compression, the lower horse motors had like 8.5:1. Just something to keep in mind.
Sounds like you got a good base to start with. I would sure love to have a caddy motor myself |
Re: How fast do YOU think she will go ?
Thanks for the input guys. I have not yet got it out to the track. Racing season don't start for another few months. Right now I'm at about $250 including shipping and handling to get it to the track with all the parts I need for it.
I will take some pictures as I start back up on the build this Monday. Thank goodness dad goes back to work. Time to work on the ol' girl again  I will also take a few videos of maybe a burn out or something, but defiantly take a video when she goes to the track. Thanks again guys, Wyatt |
Re: How fast do YOU think she will go ?
If its anything like the 472 engines be sure to change the intake. The design sucks on those. The fuel has to run up into the head because of the carb being recessed into the intake:eek::fry:

my set up is: 70 longbed fleet 1969 500 caddy (stock) th 400 3:73's 31x15 or 18 Mickey Thompsons it pulls like a monster and will pin you to the seat...just don't plan on any highway use above 70 mph (3000 rpm) I'm planning on going back to the 3.08's for drivability.....Also keep your shots down to 100 and if you can pop for the delay or your going to baste the tires more!! check my build for more info and a link to all the info you could ever want Jeff |

Re: How fast do YOU think she will go ?
My guess is low 14s.

Thanks Jeff. I'm thinking from what you put, my should run a tad slower since I don't have Mickey Thompsons. Also wondering since yours goes that fast, would mine go ruffly that fast as well on stock suspension? |

You need to find out what gear you have?? i think I found a set of 3:42's not sure how much that will change it from the 3:73's I have, but its to low a gear for these caddies if you want to drive it I think I'll end up back in my 3:08s but I drive mine everywhere |
Re: How fast do YOU think she will go ?
Alright. So pretty much its good to go as is, but would have to start changing things out if I wanted to go fast?
|
Re: How fast do YOU think she will go ?
define fast??? if you can get it to stick it will be fast for a street truck if you want to race at the track bring your check book!! for starters your going to need a valve train its the weak point of these engines no use spend big $$ until you do that
