New to me.. but Im not new to restoring.
Hi everyone. My name is Jason. I live in Cleveland ohio and have gotten a new toy. I have been restoring cars for many years and have just sold off my 62 volkswagen beetle for a 1968 GMC Long, Stepside C1500.
this truck was restored a few years back and has been sitting in storage since the restore. The PO put about 200 miles after all the work was done. once I got it home and found a few thing I want to change. The truck had a set of over sized header mufflers with no pipes. So I pulled the mufflers and this weekend it is going to get a set of Summit 3" fully welded mufflers and 3" pipes to dump in front of the rear tires. I pulled the stock wheel yesterday and got a LaCarr wheel for the truck. Did an oil change, changed the plugs and wires. Plus a new battery, old one wouldnt take a charge. Here are some pics and I hope to see lots of you at the shows this year. http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...68GMC030-1.jpg http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...9/68GMC031.jpg http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...9/68GMC032.jpg http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...9/68GMC035.jpg http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...9/68GMC034.jpg http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...9/68GMC036.jpg http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...9/68GMC039.jpg |

Re: New to me.. but Im not new to restoring.
Nice truck and welcome to the board.
It's a shame the PO didn't coat the headers before they went on - they look so out of place compared to the rest of the engine compartment. Great foundation to start with though. |
Re: New to me.. but Im not new to restoring.
Thank you everyone. I am really getting into this truck.
I took off the crap header mufflers and am puttig on a full polished exhuast this weekend with Flowmaster mufflers.. I changed out the sterring wheel for a nice Lacarra wheel. Spent today cleaning and rubbing out the paint.. It was a fun day.. cleaned the entire engine compartment and detailed. Found a stock fan shroud and chnaged that out. Still need a stock fan. I hate the aftermarket fans. So Ill hunt up a stock clutched fan this weekend. I plan to change the headers out once I get a little more money. Want a nice set of ceramic coated ones. I am trying to make one major decision. Should I leave the truck a three speed- with that on the tree or on the floor. Or do I change it out to a 700R trans. Ive already got the trans in the garage. , but would have to get the drive shaft shortened and install cooler lines. I would just rework the stock cross memeber to work with then new trans. |

Welcome, you have a nice truck,it's clean :metal:

Re: New to me.. but Im not new to restoring.
Welcome to the board! That is a good looking ride, and very unique. If everything works well mechanically, I would leave the three speed.

Re: New to me.. but Im not new to restoring.
the three on the tree seems ok for the most part. I have had twice that it has hung up on me. I had to stop and re-align the linkage under the hood.
but ive been going nuts with the truck in the last wek or so. I got a new stainless steel dual exhuast with flowmaster mufflers. this exits out under the rear bumper.. put in the new steering wheel. got a correct fan shroud and clutch fan. Plus ordered a 4 core aluminum radiator. I hate to over heat and plan to spend alot of time on the road this year. I plan to attend hot rod power tour, plus woodward dream cruise and lots of car shows. I am looking for a set of rims right now. I just dont want to spend a ton o nthem right now. so I am looking for a set of stock take offs from a late model truck. or a great set of used rims from some one on CL. Ive got two 305/60r15 and 2 285/60r15 sitting here.. id like to put them on the truck and take the truck tires off. I want more of a street rod look. but for now it wil lstay with the stock rims and tires.. |
Re: New to me.. but Im not new to restoring.
i found something out that I wasnt expecting. this truck has leaf springs in the rear. I understand that this was an option in 67-72.
I guess this will make lowering it in the future a little harder. seeing no coils in the rear to just drop in. Ill have to change the leafs or do a flip kit. |
Re: New to me.. but Im not new to restoring.
I took the truck out today.. got to reset the timing, adjust the carb, and figure out that the truck must have one hell of a cam in it.. the PO told me he had put in a cam but didnt remember what it was.
Well its got one hell of a lope and at about 3k this thing lites up and goesw screaming down the road. It does that and it still has a two barrell carb on it.. the PO was going for the stock looks with a little performance hidden. ( got to love sleepers) well as sleeper as this new exhuast will let me be.) lol.. Seeing you can hear this thing half a block down the road.. |
Re: New to me.. but Im not new to restoring.
nice looking truck! welcome to the board!

Re: New to me.. but Im not new to restoring.
well, the project just keeps moving along..
in the last few days, ive completed retuning the carb, installed a rad overflow can. I got a new 100 amp one wire alt- replacing the 65 amp unit. Summit sells a nice unit that is powder coated for 85.00.. if any one is looking for one. Ive got some chrome valve covers, and air cleaner that will go on today or tomorrow. depends on if I have to freeze to death working on it. may need to spend some time with the wife. lol. she is getting a little upset.. lol.. maybe a few hours for her then back to the truck. |
Re: New to me.. but Im not new to restoring.
well the project keeps moving.
over the last week, I installed a Be-Cool 3 core aluminum radiator. This thing is huge. lol. three 1 inch cores. colling system now holds almost 4 gallons of coolant. Then I cooled it with a electric fan from a Ford Grand Marqui. The fan worked out great. Got the fan from pull a part for $20.00. it is 19 inches in diameter. it has three mounting tabs and mounted directly to my radiator I couldnt have planned it better. I looked up the fan and it pulls 4100 CFM. I ran he truck in the drive with the drive idling to see if it would over heat for over an hour. It ran at 160 degrees all the time. right at the thermostat. Then took it for a ride on the highway then around town. This thing never got close to being to warm. So this really falls to another cheap cooling fan instlall. I even re-installed the six cylinder fan cover over the top of the eletric fan mounts so it is hidden when you look in. |
Re: New to me.. but Im not new to restoring.
here is a pic of the new radiator and fan.

Re: New to me.. but Im not new to restoring.
So, im messing around on Craigslist today. I se a guy selling rims dirt cheap. So the pics sucked and He wasnt far from me so I go and look at them.
This is what I got http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...r649/rims2.jpg 4 rims and tires. with decent 265/75r16. these things are huge.. rims are 16x8. with 4 inch back space. So I saw the ad and it said $75.00. I show up thinking $75.00 each.. I have money in hand and the guy tells me. I just need them out of my way.. lets make it $60.00 if you take them now. So I said 60 each.. he said no 60.00 for all of them. He paid over 1000.00 three years ago for the rims and tires. but sold the truck. So He was tripping over them.. What a day for me.. Got to love Steals and deals.. Just need to go get some lugnuts and mount them up.. Well clean them first.. . |
