What size fusible link for starter...

Well, I had to replace this little bugger, and it was messed up beyond recognition. Old, corroded, rotten. Right now it has a straight wire to the starter, and I need to put in a proper fusible link. What size/gauge do I need? You go with a lighter gauge wire, right? Say 16 gauge?

It's a hi-torque mini-starter on a 400 SB. 1973. I've tried searching the forums, but I get the main fusible link threads, the one on the firewall...

Thanks guys.

Hi D-Day,

The general rule for sizing fusible links is 4 number sizes from the wire it's protecting. And wires get larger as the gauge number decreases. So use a 16ga fusible link to protect a 12ga wire, 14ga fusible link for a 10ga wire, 12ga fusible link for 8ga wire, and so on.

I don't know what size wire your 73 has feeding off the starter, but the 77 wiring diagram I have shows a 10ga wire with a 14ga fusible link in that location.

Cool, thanks. I believe the wire I put in is 12 gauge, so I put on a 16 ga fusible link. Guess we'll see if that fits the bill for now!
