Exhaust heat shield
Anyone know where I can pick up the heat shields for the plug wires and the starter on a 70's small block? It's a 400 with stock manifolds.

Re: Exhaust heat shield
I was thinking more like the factory sheet metal heat shields that come up around the manifolds and protect the spark plug boots and the starter. I don't really want to put wraps on it if i can avoid it, but thank you. I guess if I have no other options, I'll go with it, but i'd rather stick to stock.

Re: Exhaust heat shield
Thise starter wraps work great, I have headers and the heat always cause my starter to drag, bought a starter wrap from Summit, no problems now. Summit also carries a stainless steel shield for the starter.
Summit part number: SUM-G1370 price is $6.50 ea. |
Re: Exhaust heat shield
I'll take a look. What about the curved bits for the plug wires/boots?

Re: Exhaust heat shield
I would check the Junk yard, they are bolted to the motor, not the manifold as it may look. So it might be a turd to do it in truck.

Re: Exhaust heat shield
Probably cost me more to drive to the junkyard than to just order new ones. It's about 100miles to the nearest u-pull-it and at $4.00 a gallon that's like an 80 dollar drive to look for a little piece of sheet metal. I'll do it if I have to but I was thinking new stuff somewhere. I'll keep looking.

Re: Exhaust heat shield
Hi Justin,
Check with your local Chevy parts dealer. When we redid the 400 in dad's 77 GMC a few years ago he was still able to get a bunch of that stuff (heat shields, manifold heat stove, etc.) right from the local dealer. They weren't very expensive either. |
Re: Exhaust heat shield
the newer vortech trucks (96-99) have what you're looking for on them stock. Any GM dealer should be able to get them.
LF and RR PN 10069945 LR and RF PN 12551505 should need 2 of each. This is for the style of manifold that goes below the spark plugs. Hope this helps....... |
Re: Exhaust heat shield
I'll look into that. Have a chevy dealer here in town. Thanks for the part numbers too, that should make it easier.
