Cruise control
 

Give me some honest opinions. Let's talk cruise control. Cruise control is in no way a requirement by any means, but like many of us it would be the added feature of our trucks (power windows, cd player, etc.) So my truck did not come with cruise control but somewhere over the years-between owners my trucks steering column got switched out with a cruise control switch on the turn signal. So that's what sparked the idea. What's it gonna take to install a full cruise control system in our trucks that never had it? Is there an aftermarket kit? Is it even worth it at all? Tell me all the pros and cons all the different ways of going about it, before I dive in head first into something I don't know alot about. Thanks for everybody's .02;)

That have kits to retto fit your truck. tha ones i've seen start @ 2 bills & go from there.

Aftermarket would be the way to go. The stock system needs several components and is vacuum operated and would be more expensive. Modern electronic cruise control is much more reliable. I would search the net and go from there.

You can buy a kit that works well for less than $350. Rostra makes them. I have one in my Dodge and I am getting ready to install one in my project truck. I am buying it from this dealer. http://www.thecruisecontrolstore.com/ Tom seemed to be knowledgeable and was very helpful. I found them through an internet search and have never purchased anything from them.

The system is throttle cable based and it gets speed information from a sensor you place between your transmission and the speedo cable.

I've been thinking about this as well. I have a truck right now with the Factory Cruise and I must say it is so so. If/when you can get it set it will either one pulse back and forth thus wasting fuel or 2 just start making you accelerate. I realize that mine is just having issues but I think an aftermarket unit would be the way to go due to the simplicity of the stand alone units. my 2 cents.

I have a Rostra unit my my truck. Works great! Now they have an electronic version. I use a vacuum one. Worth every penny!! I installed it myself!

Whether to add cruise or not depends on your ability to use it. I have factory cruise in my square, and in the 33 years I've owned it, I've probably used it less than five times. Traffic in L.A. does not lend itself to using cruise with any efficency.

Tell me more about ur setup. Did you install it yourself, if so how difficult was it? What about the switch? And the engine comportment, is it big an bulky or is it tucked away neatly?....give me some more info

The system I have in my Dodge came with it. I will be installing one that I am buying for the my current project. The controller is a turn signal lever replacement. They make them for various styles. The heart of the system is an electronically controlled device that manipulates the throttle just like a driver pushing the the accelerator. It get speed info from the insert and connects to the brake light switch to turn it off when you use the brake.

The electrical install is fairly straight forward. Getting the controller and cable installed well will the most demanding part. But that shouldn't be too bad. Hopefully some others that have already installed the system will join in. Otherwise, I will tell you how it goes in about 6 weeks.;)
