Rear Spring Thing
 

Trying to beaf up my rear suspension some and level it out. I have a 3 leaf spring pac and I found a 7 leaf pac thats from a '78 half ton. The spring length from mine is 48" eye to eye and the 7 leaf set is 53" eye to eye. I don't see any more mounting holes on my frame to relocate the hangers. I don't mind the additional leafs and it should hold more weight. I just don't know where I can find another 5"

So how do I fit a 53" spring into a 48" hole?

Think I can swap support springs and keep my 48" main springs? Even it up, inch or so higher and capable of a couple of hundred more?

The holes were there on my 73 and my 77.

Couple more questions:
Does the front mount also have to be moved?
Is this spring pac that much stronger and does it increase ride height any?
Did you switch to the shorter set and why?

The rear springs are actually considered "52's" or "56's".
The extra 4 inches is all found behind the centering pin, so you only have to move the rear shackle hanger to fit them.
They might have a bit of a firmer ride, but they will sit a bit higher and have more capasity when hauling.

That 73 in the pic went from short to long because like you had a 7 leaf pack and the PO had heated and removed leafs. Then went back to the short 3 leaf pack trying to get it too hook at the drag strip.

I see your pic of the 9" install. It looks like your shocks are both mounted forward of the axle. Was there a factory bolt hole for that? Are they stock shocks?

I'd see if you can go to the five or seven leaf packs again. The stiffer you are the more traction you will receive. A light spring allows the axle to lift, even during accelleration weight transfer.

Actually the 3 leaf works better as it has more stored energy. Same idea as a Moroso trick front spring. The stiff 7 leaf pack would'nt work i tried and i drilled a new hole for the left shock, and theyre stock.

If you come accross some coil over shocks give them a try. On our MC at the drags we had much more traction with the coils tightened up. From the point of a smokin burn out to hanging on the handlbar with one hand as the bike was straight up. Almost a hotdog eatin the weenie. No pics but I didn't let the KZ1000 drop.

Been to Fomoso too. I lived in Bakersfield for 7 years (7 year sentence).
