My 50th Suspension change
5 Attachment(s)
Well the old suspension has served me well for 10 years but it's time for an update . in the pics that follow you will see the old crossmember is out to get repalced with an 83 front end including drop spindles and disk brakes it will also be 5on 4 3/4 bolt pattern front and rear . The rear is a car rear end that is 4'' narrower than the stock one . there is also a teaser pic of the new wheels . I will show how I achieved the the new bolt pattern on the front soon till then enjoy the pics..

Lookin' good I'll have to stop over and see the progress. Good talking to you tonight Bob. LockDoc |
Re: My 50th Suspension change
By changing the crossmember, does that mean the motor will be mounted in a different location than stock? I am asking because I mounted a 86 control arms on my 69 and am having header issues with them hitting rear of bottom control arms. I did not change crossmember though. Thanks! Chad

Re: My 50th Suspension change
Motor will be in stock location . can't see any header issues with it yet.

Well I now have the front rotors drilled and the front suspension mounted tomorrow I will put the new wheels on it . I will plumb the brakes when I get it back on the ground . Got the tires mounted today also . In the pictures is the plate that I made for the 4 3/4 bolt pattern it has drill guide bushings and tap bushings the center is .002 bigger than the hub for a nice snug fit . all in all it works very well . Enjoy the pics and I will try to post up some more tomorrow..

Re: My 50th Suspension change
Looks great!
Did you change the M/C and add a disc/drum proportioning valve? |
Re: My 50th Suspension change
same M/C add disk/drum prop valve Upon some reading the M/C is supposed to work, after bleeding I have good pedal so we will see if it works . Figured it was worth a shot kinda on a low budget but if it doesn't work right it will get changed .

Re: My 50th Suspension change
I think you could make some money selling these rotors with a 5x4.75 bolt pattern.
There seems to be interest by members looking to get this pattern on these old trucks. I assume you have to turn the hub diameter down to match your "jig" that you made? |
Re: My 50th Suspension change
Nope the hub diameter stays the same the jig fits over it very tightly .

Re: My 50th Suspension change
The motors back in and a few hours away from running and driving going to have to order some new springs front is about 3'' too tall no pictures tonight but when I get it out for a test drive I will take some more . kinda excited to drive it and see how well it stops now .

Re: My 50th Suspension change
Like the new wheels, but hate to say it was one of my favorite trucks with the rallies. I was also surprised you did'nt go with a cop caprice rear or impala ss. Either way still a forum favorite.

Re: My 50th Suspension change
I know I liked the rallys but it was time for a change as far as the rear end goes I got a great deal on it and it's the width I wanted so we will see how strong it is . I'm sure it will be strong enough I have seen a few GN's with big turbos and slicks running stock rears with no problem .

Re: My 50th Suspension change
No doubt gn rear will hold the power, but if I was going to have to modify a rear it would have disc. Can please add a corrosive chemical to the new wheels they are to shiny.

Re: My 50th Suspension change
I'm sure I will get tired of polishing them and wish I had steel wheels again but right now I sure like the look of it so far Can't wait to get the big ol rear ones to complete the look .... As far as disk rear if I decide I need them later I will adapt . I will probably throw myself threw the windshield with the front discs I have always had power drums on it ...

Re: My 50th Suspension change
Well it's nice to see someone going for go rather than show. It reminds me of my 71 chevelle worked 327 line lock 4 wheel drum and manual steering. God knows how I survived. That was my first car.
