Shipping our trucks
 

Ok, so a few of you that have been following my build thread know that my father has been kicking ass on the body and paint of my truck while I have been overseas. Well, the time has come and its looking like my baby is coming home now!

The only thing is that there is about 1000 miles between our door steps... He lives in Colorado just north of Denver, and I live in southern California pretty close to the San Bernardino area. We though about driving his truck with a trailer, but the cost of fuel to get it to Cali and then drive back, would be pretty expensive, not to mention time consuming.

Now I am looking into getting it shipped out on a truck, and then flying him out here for when it gets here.

Here are my questions and concerns
-Would you put it in an inclosed? or not worry about it and do an open trailer?
-If you say open, have you ever had any damage done? due to weather, people, road gunk, or the operator?
-What has been your average price to ship it?
-Who do you prefer to go through? you know anyone that does it?

Ive never had to do this kind of thing before, so Im just trying to calm some nerves...

Put the Ironhead in the back of the truck, drive to so cal drop the truck off and ride the Sportster back!

Haha, the hood would need a fresh coat of paint after that trip!

LOL wait until you see the seat on this thing... you would be lucky to make it an hour on that hog

I used Uship.com and had pretty good luck with that. I'd recommend an enclosed trailer though since your paint is real nice. When they hauled my truck back from oregon, they had it over a nice bmw. I pulled it into the garage and found the bed wood was falling out, there were pieces of steel in the bed also that may have or could have fell down and hit the bmw. In this case, the guy i bought the truck from neglected to clean it out, the shipping company didn't, and didn't keep it on the bottom of the truck. Though if you go with a guy with a pickup and trailer, you wouldn't have that problem.

Also, call the big movers. They like to cross the US with full loads and are often looking for more stuff to move.

United Van Lines, Allied, Bekins, etc. Afraid your going to find out moving and airline tickets far outweigh gas and some vacation time.

I would fly out and drive it back....Blue painters Tape anywhere up front where anything could hit and you are good to go...

My buddy had a 70s Olds convertible that he was shipping cross country. The rig caught on fire and torched his car on the trailer. Freak accident though.

I have shipped three vehicles. First was a suburban from Omaha to a small town outside of colorado springs. Used Diamond Transportation. They done a good job no problems or damage cost was about $500-600. That was during the first hike in fuel prices everybody was looking for something to haul. Second was my 72 Blazer from somewhere in Montana to my house in CO. Same shipper took a little bit to get picked up and arrived out of fuel and they ran the battery down trying to start it. The gas guage didnt work either. Cost was around $600. Lastely a 04 Sub from Florida to Co. Diamond had alot of trouble picking it up so we used World Wide Transp. He got it right away and no problems around $800. All were open trailers with no damage but vehicles werent as nice as your truck. Enclosed will run you more money but would probably be worth it. Just make a few calls they all will give you quotes. Just my .02. Good luck, very nice truck.:metal:

A buddy of mine hired one of those multi-car carrier companies to bring his recently purchased 69 camaro. The guy loading the truck got confused as to which was the brake and which was the gas. He drove it right off the top of the truck! Write-off.
When he found a suitable replacement we drove the 1500 miles to get it. I would recomend doing it yourself. Just my .2cents

Why are you worried about the paint coming off the hood if you drive it? I've driven mine cross country a couple of times and the paint still looks like new.
