Just pulled the motor out the 82 and need help

I picked up a 82 swb a couple weeks ago and I jerked the motor out bout an hour ago. The truck title says it was originally a Diesel and the stickers on the radiator core support say 5.0. The original owner ditched the Diesel and supposebly put a 350 in its place. Ive been down this road before and lied to before. So i wanna make sure I know what i got. The driver side motor numbers on the block are GM 3970010. Can someone please tell me what size motor it is? Thanks in advance.

Re: Just pulled the motor out the 82 and need help

There should be a set of numbers stamped on the the front of the block. They are stamped on the blank area in front of your passanger side head. Look at the link i posted man some good info on there also decoding the same casting number for the reason of chevy using the same numbers a some different engine blocks

You can find out for sure by removing the head. Measure the bore and stroke. Bore is 4" like a 350. Stroke is 3.25 inches. On a 350, the stroke is 3.48. 327s were made from 1962–1969. It's highly unlikely to be a 327, unles the previous owner got lucky and found one. Our trucks never came with a 327 from the factory.

That is a casting date - 2/20/1966 - which doesn't match with the other numbers. Double check those, they are many times hard to read. If the last number is an "8" then you probably have a 327 since they used that block for 327s in 68. 327s were used for lower HP applications in those years like in my 68 Camaro that came with a 210 HP 327 but were also easy to hop up because the shorter stroke could wind up pretty quick a work good in a lighter car. For a truck a 350 would be better IMO. A little more torque for hauling, towing, etc. If that engine is a 327 and original it might be worth some money to the right person. Can you get numbers off the crank? That should settle what you have.

Re: Just pulled the motor out the 82 and need help

It's a '76, 350. GM didn't start casting that block until the late 60's, so it couldn't be a '66. That's the most common casting number of 350 block. Could be a great block if it's a 4-bolt with "2482" cast into the main caps, they're nodular iron instead of grey cast iron. Could be 2 or 4 bolt, the only way to tell is with a scope or by pulling the pan to check.

Thanks for the info^. Tomorrow hopefully I can jerk the pan off and check for the 2482 stamping(hopefully its a 4-bolt). Thanks again. So The stamping on the passenger side rear of the motor was B20-6. So Does that mean it was built in Feb. 20, 1976? Im new to breaking some of these castings. So bare with me:lol:

Re: Just pulled the motor out the 82 and need help

Sounds like you have it figured out.
Don't be disappointed if you don't have the 2482 caps, a '76 casting should still be plenty strong for a good street/strip engine.

Re: Just pulled the motor out the 82 and need help

According to 73-87.com, you have a 1969-79 3970010 350, between 185hp- 370hp with 2 or 4 mains, that came in a car, truck, Vette . It also says it can be 327 in 68.

Re: Just pulled the motor out the 82 and need help

Well Thanks to everyone, Everyone was so helpful. After getting all my cast numbers and doing some research I know know my motor(3970010) is a 350 four bolt main. Assembled in Feb. 27,1976 in the Flint plant in Detroit, Michigan. I also know my crankcase cast# 3932442 and know its stroke, years made, main/rod Journal size, and know it has cast large Journals. My Head casting # is 333882 which was made from 70-82, the valve size, H.P levels for head, and chamber size. The motor was used in Truck, chevelle, nova, and camaro's. Theirs also three different motor sizes which has the same block number 3970010. The 302,327, and 350.:metal: Thanks again to everyone who helped. I went from " Yup The motors got oil, to all this great and useful info".
