AC from 84 into 76?
hey all, I have a 76 I'm gonna start rebuilding, I am starting to collect parts, and I recently came across an 84 that has AC, I am buying it for parts, and was wondering if I could convert my 76 to air? are the holes in the fire wall the same? I can always cut and weld, but was just wondering how much work this is gonna be....lol
for the compressor I will need to sort that out to, I am swapping in an 04 6.0L and 4l80e, not sure if I will use the low mount, or fab up some brackets and run a compressor on the RH top? |
Re: AC from 84 into 76?
Get a catalogue from www.lmctruck.com. You'll find the difference in A/C parts. You can swap it in.
You can use the stock A/C setup. Adaptors are available to properly route the hoses for use. 77 LS install http://www.hotrodlane.cc/77chevytruck/77chevy.htm You can also use a early 90's style compressor and bracket. http://www.maliburacing.com/forum/vi...hp?=34&t=79059 I would use the LS compressor. It is more efficient and will last longer. A new condensor should be a crossflow type. If you buy one, check that it's a true cross flow for R134. |
Re: AC from 84 into 76?
awsome, I wasn't sure if the fire wall was the same, I came across the malibu site a while ago, I was planning on doing that old mount, but might consider building a bracket to hold a newer compressor.

You might want to make sure that the HVAC control on the dash is functioning properly. I think it is difficult to find a replacement. I got one from LMC about 8 years ago but they no longer have them.

Re: AC from 84 into 76?
I'm not sure if the older truck had A/C or not from reading your post but the firewalls are a little different between A/C and non A/C trucks. I don't remember which one is larger, but you will have to do some cutting or welding.
I was just over at Vintage Air a couple of hours ago talking with them about this very subject. I wish I had paid more attention now! :) Slonaker |
