Rear Brake Drum stuck

hi there,

I tried to take of the right rear brake drum today to change the brakepads en cilinders, but the drum will not come of.

I have hit it with a rubber hammer and loosened the adjuster, but no luck. It seems to be stuck on the axle or the bolts (8 bolts).

any advise on how I can get it of? we have pouned and twisted it for 2 hours tonight and tried anything.

please help!

here's a picture of the piece of c#$%#$%p!

I normally hit the drum towards the axle. The breaks them loose most of the time. I think you need something a little more manly then a rubber mallet.

hit the studs with a generous shot of PB Blaster and let it soak for a bit then hit it again then smack the drum (not the studs) with a hammer. dont smack it too hard or it might crack.

hi Altec and Keith: thanks guys, but I already did that.

I sprayed a lot of WD40 on the studs and axle several times, let is soak for a while and then hit it with a hammer like this:

but no luck sofar.

I am wondering if there is something that I am missing.

I tried hitting the drum from the front, from the back, to the side. I also tried hitting the drum and the stud at the same time with two hammer. It wont move...

really frustrating, because the other side comes of pretty easily.

Is it moving at all? If not, try the PB Blaster and see if you can get an air hammer/chisel. The rapid tapping of the hammer might just get it busted loose.

I start with a wire wheel around the axle to the drum
then sideways hits with a BFH
from the back can you get the knock out out then use a flat screwdriver to back off the ajuster(may be a rubber plug back there)

I'll do the wire wheel and drench the thing in WD40 for two more days, drive it around and then try again Saturday. hope it works!

I'll be back!

maybe get another lube wd40 is not the best
make sure the oil stays off the shoes/pads or they will be trash
i sometimes will light sand/scrape off the gunk off the bottom of the shoes
make sure the shoes are not wearing off centre....holding the drum on

Re: Rear Brake Drum stuck

I bought a junk yard rear axle for my K5 Jimmy and the left drum and even the factory steel wheel were next to impossible to remove.

In this case I ended up having to use a large two arm puller (a three arm would have been better). It was quite a chore even with that. The brake shoes had worn down to the metal and had badly grooved the drum. When everything was off the drum as well as the shoes and springs were toast. I had to replace everything except for the cylinders.

Interestingly, the new drum fit very tightly on the axle flange, and the wheel stuck again. So I guess I'll have to grind down what seems to be a slightly oversize axle flange.

I did it. it took a lot of force.

we fitted a screwdriver between the drum and the back, put a little pressure on it and then hit it pretty hard with a BFH! (hahaha)...

it came of. thanks guys! chaning the brakes tomorrow night!
