HID Headlights
Has anyone upgraded their 85 or 86 with HID Headlights? If so where did you purchase them. Do they work correctly in the vehicle?
Thanks! Phil: |
Re: HID Headlights
Honestly, dont waste your time. I tired this, and because of the way the housings are that are required for to run HIDS it just doesnt work. The light beam is scattered all over the place and there will be sections of light that are brighter then others. Its not a true HID beam, to sum it up its like driving with your highs on.
What I did was purchase the lights that LMC truck sells for 35$s each. They are square headlights that take a bulb so you can replace the bulb rather then the whole light assembly, I then went and bought 2 sets of PIAA Extreme white headlight bulbs. I also bought the head light harness LMC sells so the headlight power is drawn off the battery rather then through the fuse box. It made a HUUUUGE difference. |
Re: HID Headlights
I will post a picture tonight so you can see what im talking about when I say the light beam is scattered all over the place and spots are brighter then others.

Re: HID Headlights
If you buy aftermarket lamps that you like that have anything but a glass housing, you can retrofit the lamps to a projector if you have fabrication skills... if not the acurrent aftermarket is garbage. If you decide to retrofit, you will have to cut up the new headlights, headlight buckets, and core support. It can be done, as I have done it but with a 90 burban clip..
I used a projector housing and fitted it to the back of the headlight, fabed up some mounts, made the core support hole barley big enough to fit the new assembly through and a quick wiring job with a relay and done. Light output is clean, no glare and OE like. http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/41/dsc0838t.jpg http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/4822/dsc0840a.jpg http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/7056/dsc0839u.jpg Search my user name for HID and you will find more info clint |
Re: HID Headlights
Ok here is what I was talking about..
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/x...C/HPIM4195.jpg I thought about retro fitting real projectors, but would much rather pay someone to do them for me, and that would cost upwards of $1000 |
Re: HID Headlights
Psst.. 135 plus shipping(eBay) bixenon projectors some exhaust tubing it sheet metal, welder, harbor freight grinding tools and time. I'm a fabricator in my spare time so I can see the end result before I start so it's easier for me than Joe. If you had the projector, a lense that didn't have a glass reflector/housing the headlight bucket I would retro fit it for a doo-able $ . You would still
need to open the core support hole Clint Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: HID Headlights
I have these from truck-lite. They are the same as the LMC "EUROPEAN STYLE" in my 90 suburban with single headlight setup.
http://www.truck-lite.com/wcsstore/t...w/27009-lr.jpg They use the 9003 (H4) style bulb which I swapped out for the H.I.D. kit I got from www.v-leds.com https://app.infopia.com/velocity/ima...ES/H4_BULB.jpghttp://a763.g.akamai.net/7/763/1644/...tra/3/size/250 http://a763.g.akamai.net/7/763/1644/...tra/4/size/250http://a763.g.akamai.net/7/763/1644/...tra/5/size/250 And they also offer them for older stacked four headlight set ups like yours. Again listed in the LMC catalog. http://www.truck-lite.com/wcsstore/t...w/27010-lr.jpg |

Re: HID Headlights
The only way to run true HIDs is your going to need to find a clear glass housing, and have someone retro fit real projectors into them. Its going to cost alot of money, but you wont get pulled over because you will have the beam cut off that the projectors produce, IE wont be blinding drivers on the other side of an 8 lane freeway.

Re: HID Headlights
thanx BLE 'BURBAN! Any pix of yours on your rig and or at night. did you go with the 5000 bulb?
|
Re: HID Headlights
Yeah I got the 5K bulbs. and as far as pics go, I don't have any current pics on here but I did do a write up on it here......
HID UPGRADE Incidently v-leds is where I got ALL my led lights from. All totalled I've got over $1100.00 invested in my light conversion on my burb. There's not a single factory bulb in it anywheres now. But that was over the course of 18months. |
Re: HID Headlights
I've been checkin around. They make projector lights for 7" rounds and for 4x6 squares. Been wanting to find some for my squares, but I'm running small squares on a 91 suburban grill (the duals). Found some really cheap ones, just can't find the ones for my squares =[
