Got her all cleaned up and painted. I rebuilt the carrier with new bearings as the old ones were barrel shaped. Its a 5.14 geared detroit locker unit. The date stamp on the ring gear looks to be 1958. The housing itself is 1960 vintage from a 3/4 ton fleetside which is why theres no spring pads on it. The 1960 it came from had coils too but the trailing arms were spaced about 4 inches wider than my 68's so I had to cut the pads off. I'll bolt it in place with new spring pads and weld them on the tube after I set the pinion angle and center the axle. The Locker works perfectly. I cant wait to try it. 5.14 sounds like a steep gear but it shouldnt be too much with the 32 inch tires. I'll have to try the old tape a hundred to the dash trick.

5:14's, Wow! I guess you won't be driving to North Bend again anytime soon...

looking good I dont think you could break one of those rearends with a sledgehammer, I tried for two years. But they weigh more than any rearend I ever had to move around. Wonder what they weigh. Track opens in a month!

That damned loaded carrier has got to be 180 lbs by itself. The housing doesnt seem to be any worse than a 9 inch ford and the brakes make up the rest . I'd say at least 350 total although it may be a bit more. When I bought it I know two of us lifted it in the back of my truck and that guy was a big Mofo . I had to act like one.

Hey Mike, Let us know how it launches!

The center section is 140lbs. Exactly.

After it fell on my hand, I was curious. Only 10lbs lighter than my trans. Gotta love cast iron! :D

Just took it for a little trip down the road. Didnt seem all that obnoxious but I only went 40 mph. Little chirping from the tires going into a corner after a stop as you'd expect from a locker. I'll let you know more tomorrow after I hook up the rear brakes. Damned line twisted off at the hose so I have to cut the line and put a new end on it in the morning. I also have to shorten the panhard bar. The dana one was too short and the one from the '60 was a few inches too long .

That sounds awesome, man you sure know your stuff

5.14s demand respect, you better get some smokey burnout pics on here soon

mikep 03-23-2003 12:27 AM

I have every intention of doing just that!

UNCLEBOB 03-23-2003 01:28 AM

How long does the panhard bar need to be I have one on my corporate axle I took out, its yours if it will work.

mikep 03-23-2003 02:34 AM

Thanks UncleBob but I already got mine cut and welded up.

I must say that the dana 60 that came out of my truck was one that I have nerve seen before. Its marked 60-3E on the front and on the bottom and has the panhard bar mount cast into the housing center section....weird.

Hey, you should show us proof of the locker!!!!!!!! Come on you know you want to. :D

I'm kind of babying it until I can find a slightly longer rear driveshaft. Ive got about an inch and a half engagement on the splines at the carrier bearing which is less than I'd like. seems the eaton is a good bit shorter front to rear. the smoke show will have to wait till this weekend when I hit the boneyard for a longer shaft although I did try it out this morning at 5 AM in the work parking lot. the tires were still smoking when I parked it . looked pretty damned cool :)
