th400 question

is there spacers that go between the torq convertor and the flywheel,i just installed the tranny and there seems to be about 1/4 inch or more space between them after i tighten the bolts

no spacers that i know of, are your bolts bottoming out on the converter?? you definitely don't want any slack beween the torque converter and the flywheel, I've pulled about 10 of those things and never seen any spacers yet.1/4" is alot of clearance, not much less than when the converter is all the way in the tranny. try shorter bolts and make sure your bell housing is tight to the block.

ive run into this problem too, but on th350, i just uused washers ot take up all the gap between the plate and verter, also there are two styles of verters, one has bolts that thread directly into the verter and then theres the more cvommon nut and bolt style

the bolt only style has big lugs that protrude off the verter and look like they would take up the room of the gap between it and the plate. some applications used them, i have one or two of those dtyle verters here, the 425 79 caddy th400 used it, but the 72 455 th400 car didnt, it used the flat nut and bolt style flange verter, so...

hmm..

In some cases, you will have about 1/4 in "play" in the converter where is bolts up to the flywheel, unless your flywheel is on backwards. Some of these tranny input shafts/or converter shafts were machined a tick longer/shorter depending on where they came from.

sound slike bad quality control to me,,.

doughby82 03-25-2002 02:41 PM

so i should use a spacer between them, the tranny is tight against the the motor, the verter is thread in,

Naw....sorry so long for a return post, I've had play in mine since I put it together, no problems, I guess you could space it up for your comfort zone though, should'nt hurt anything either way.

If the engine used to be for a manual transmission, there may still be a pilot bearing in the back of the crankshaft still. That would cause the converter to not fully seat in the crank and give you the gap. Something is wrong.

You should have 3/16-1/4" floating clearance between the converter& flex plate.....before its bolted up. The conveter should slide up to sit flush against the flexplate when you bolt it up.....or you have troubles. 69 longhorn.

i just removed a th350 from it so it wasnt a stickshift before
