Any other hood styles besides cowl hoods??

Everyone has cowl hoods... are there any different styles out there? Anyone here built their own? I think it would be cool to do something like a shaker hood. But I have no idea where to start with something like that.

Anyone else done something different and cool?

That is a cool site.... they only have cowl hoods for the 67-68. I like the ram air for the 69-72. It look pretty awesome.

I'm looking for a 67-68 hood but I'd like to do something other than just a plan hood or cowl hood. Everyone has one or the other.

wouldny you just need to trace the hole on a shaker hood then cut it in a flat hood and stick the shaker air cleaner thingy on there? i mean i would clean the cuts and every thing up and it make it look pretty. i want to make a 70 chevelle functional cowl hood for my truck

I agree; but I think the hardest thing would be getting the height correct. I'd like to keep the factory styled hood & fab a shaker out of the same design instead of smoothing everything out.

Re: Any other hood styles besides cowl hoods??

Pick up a old hood and install on your truck, measure from the firewall to the lower edge of windshield and from the firewall to the center of the carb. close the hood and add both measurements and drill a small hole on the hood. this should put you close to the center of the carb. i would check with a rod with a drop of paint on the end, dropped straight down the hole. once you find the center of the carb on the hood, you can trace & cut out the area from your shaker. close the hood and measure the space between the carb and the hood for any spacers that you need to raise the shaker the the desired height. check the alignment and if good cut out your good hood and install.

Impressive there rpmgroup... I never sat down to think it all out before, having the scrap hood would provid extra metal to make the shaker match the contour also. Sweet, I'm inspired...

i'ved used Unlimited Products for front clips and hoods before. http://up22.com. I'm sure they have alot of the same stuff as US body though, but I've never used them. Like posted above, grab a spare hood, a scoop or insert, and go to town on it. With a little hard work you'll have a complete one-off. The best part is when everyone asks you where you bought it, you can stand proud saying its built not bought! Oh no...now I'm getting ideas for mine. :banghead:

Re: Any other hood styles besides cowl hoods??

there was a guy back in 05 or 06 doing a 70-72 oldsmobile cutless ram air hood that was turning out nice. ( hard to imagine huh?) I don't think he ever did finish it but might be worth a search.

Re: Any other hood styles besides cowl hoods??

you could put some of those lund stick on scoops. You just stick them on, no body work, hell you don't een have to paint them to match your truck. Well it's the popular thing to do around here anyways.
personally I'm a stock hood kind of guy.

I installed a pair of 68-69 Camaro Louvers on my '65. We all know these were not functional on the Camaros but I have designed a "cowl induction" style air cleaner arrangement to pull air throught the louvers. I have purchased some of the components, but still need to fabricate some additional parts and find the time to finish the installation. A lot of other things to do on my truck though before then.

Re: Any other hood styles besides cowl hoods??

Lakeroadster; hi, i wonder if your vents would act like a venturi and pull air out of the carb. unlike a cowl scoop which uses the low pressure zone at the bottom of the windshield to move air into the carbs. i would tie a small ribbon on your vents and drive it around to check the air flow at various speeds.

I welded in a pair of 68/69 Chevelle SS scoops into my hood last fall. (had the hood in my garage collecting dust for eons that I bought for $25 dollars)

I've never seen it done with this year before so I guess it's a one of a kind for now. I also changed to 69 Chevelle SS marker lights.

I guess my C10 is now a C10SS?

P.S. I think the 70-72 Chevelle SS domed hood scoop or cowl induction would be awesome but I didn't have any of those "lying around." lol

Here's one but the left side still has to be tightened down in this pic. Also a pic of these in primer that shows more detail.
