454 or 350 motor

so my father works at a scrap yard and they bring in whole vehicles alot so last week he had a 76 burb come in with a 454/400 so he ripped the motor/tranny out and took it home for me to see if I wanted to use it.I dont know if I should have this motor rebuilt or just get a 350 from his work and do one of those.whatever I get rebuilt its going in my stock 81 c10 that came with a 250/th350.the truck is going to be used as a sunday driver only.which combo should i use.thanks mike

Big block. Once you've felt that massive torque, you'll throw rocks at smallblocks.

I can honestly tell you that I have never once thought to myself, "Wow, I really wish I had a small block instead of this 454" ... just sayin'.

As they say, there's no replacement for displacement!

Ditto 454/400. I have had 350/350, 454/400 and my current 454/SM 465 Granny 4spd. Of these 3 combos, the 454/400 was by far the best. It performed waaay better than the others, and was actually no different in fuel consumption (all got about 10-11 city, 13-14 hwy). Now if you are talking 1/2 ton 350/700R with TBI and 2:73 rear axle, then you have a fuel sipper and quite quick also. Also, the 454s idle smoother and accelerate smoother than a 350. My current 454 runs smoother than the new V8 SUVs and trucks I have been buying the past several years. But each to his or her own.

You can't go wrong with either combo.......But I don't think you would regret the 454. There is no easier way to build horsepower and keep streetability than adding cubic inches.

If you go with the big block, you'll definitely want to match it with the turbo 400. The t350 will bolt up to the 454, but you really need the beefier t400 to handle the torque you'll get from the big block.

I'm with tusconjwt, the 454/400 is, by far, my favorite combo.
