Door locks
 

My 62 GMC locks from the passengers side only, can I which the push buttons from the doors and will they work? Or are they for left or right only?

I just fitted some new lock barrels to my '63 yesterday . There was nothing on the packaging that said they had to go on one side or the other so I just threw them in any-which-way and they work just fine . The barrels (The bit you push) look identical either side .

Just make sure that the key operates in the handle before you re-fit them to the doors , mine were a bit sensitive to the internal spring seating properly so best to check first . Also the door handles are mounted with two short bolts that have a special security type head (A bit like an elongated Allen head) that either needs the right tool to undo or , like mine , is so mangled from someone else's bodging that most of them will need drilling out .

No worries . Oh one other thing . When you remove the circlip that holds the barrel in at the rear of the handle (You'll see what I mean when you have the handle off) make sure you've got your hand around the end of it as you pop the circlip out . Lets just say that the spring is more powerful than you'd think and I'm glad my kit came with new springs cups and circlips :D

Well It's been awhile since my last post, but I'm back . I took off both door handles and witched the buttons and the driver door won't even shut right. I can pull the handle and the door opens.. The flat piece of metal that is in back of the buttons are different lengths. I'm stumped, Is there something I'm missing.


Just don't want to be unlocking the pass. door to get in.

put matching locks on both doors.

Thanks Clyde65, I think I'm going to do that. The only thing that gets me is that when I pull the buttons out, the little bar attached to them are different lengths. Should they be the same because when I switch them the driver door doesn't work?

No they arent the same length, but I think the non locking are the longer, so you should be able to adjust them as needed. welll, looking at the part, looks like they come with the plunger rod.

I recently swapped mine, just had the locksmith change the tumbler (button) from one side to the other. I have to reach across to unlock or lock the passenger door buy I get in from the drivers side with a key. I have never quite understood why they only keyed the passenger side ?

Keith, mine was the way yours is now.

They did that for safety ( on curb side) and cuz your going to let your lady in first and she doesnt mind reaching over to unlock your door as she is sliding to the middle of the bench seat.

Many old cars are that way.
