burnt again need advice
 

hey guys need some advice as to what to do last fall i had a th350 rebuilt for my new motor by a local shop the trans worked flawless before i took it down as it had been rebuilt not long before i just wanted a once over and a shift kit put in and while it was there a stall to match my new cam anyway all was done and everything checked out good so about a week ago the weather broke and i bolted my tranny to my new motor and bolted it in poured in the oil they supplied me with and fired it up to find out it doesn't work its full of oil every thing hooked up and the truck won't move untill 2500 rpm then it just slips bad won't shift and so on she's a real turd i went back to the shop told him the story and he told me since they didn't install it in the truck the best he could do was rebuild it again for 850 im already in it for 1,072.50 for the convertor and 446.05 for the inspection and shift kit plus 800 for the first rebuild im very upset at this point i found out i can buy a brand new b&m from a perf shop three hours away for 940 and a holeshot 3000 stall for 340 they'll ship it for 45 and back it i think thats what i'll have to do more money but what do you do any one have any imput i think they should back there work but i guess i can't force them and i just have to take that and roll with it

sounds like to much stall..what are tha cam & rear end spec

the stall is what was recommended by the the engine builder and the trans shop its got 373s in it right now... regardless (and i'll say im no expert with trannys) i should not have to rev the poor motor to 2500 + rpm for the truck to start moving and i don't think that explains not shifting does it? should i pull the stall and put my old converter in and see what happens at any rate i'm not very fond of pulling the tranny again just to find out they screwed something up inside

No shift may be no vacume to the modulator. I would first pull the pan and check the filter and bottom of the pan for any sediments and metal to see if tranny is completely toast. If it looks fairly clean then I would try a differnt torque converter. Just my thoughts I'm no tranny expert.

Did you fill the converter with fluid prior to installation? Did you let the truck warm up to normal operating temp before checking the trans fluid. Also, once it's warmed up, run it through the gears while sitting still and check the fluid.

i filled the convertor before putting it on i ran the tranny till it was warm topped up the fluid so i know thats all good yes it has vaccume to the modulator i have no more ideas the convertor should have filled it's self the rest of the way in the time its ran.. less than an hour but still... every thing is clean i dropped a quart of oil out of the drain plug last night just to be sure i'll be going down to the trans shop in the a.m one more time to see if they want to fix there screw up if not i'll pull it and set it on there heads this one sends me into a world of pist off i have never been before...then i guess i'll call B&M for a trans and convertor i just can't understand how a small town buisness gets away with this kind of crap i know we honor our work at the shop i work at and will do almost anything to make sure the customer is happy :banghead:

Was the convertor "seated properly"... My nephew has toasted 2 trannys because he failed to lock in the convertor and pump..

I went through a similar thing once (when I was young and naiive), after blaming myself I rebuilt the trans 3 times. Out of desperation I removed the "new" stall converter (that I bought from same trans shop), threw the original converter in and it worked perfectly.

I have a deep seated distrust for transmission repair shops that will never go away due to this.

I'll bet you a "full service" at the Goat Lube Express that it's the converter.

Agreed. It sounds like the high stall converter is the problem. I remember my nephew put one in his truck and gave me a ride. It rev'd up on take off and I could not feel it shift though it actually did. Could this be the case with yours? That high stall converter may be a good match for your engine combo on the strip but not so much on the street.

be sure you have a big external trans. cooler the stall converter make alot more heat.

well guys thanks for all the suggestions i think i'm going to grab a new stock convertor off the shelf in the shop and go pop it in today i'll post wheather or not anything changes what a pain... im 100% sure everything i put toghether was right as i always recheck everything and its not my first go at the old motor tranny swap for this poor old truck i just can't will with trannys it seems

bang on thank you so much... you sir are god to me right now such a great site full of great people thanks again i can sleep tonight i'll still be going down to the shop in the a.m to see if i can get some of the money out of them for this 10" paper weight but im just glad it all works and i can get on with tuning my new monster :metal:

I have a 3500 rpm Converter in mine and have had quite a few converters in the 2000-3000 RPM range... and I have never had the experience that he is having...

Did you fill the converter with fluid prior to installation? like a full quart in it...

the trans shop figures something isn't right with the convertor they sent it back and i'll find out for sure is a few weeks either way i'm happy with the stock converter for now and yes it was primed with a full quart and seated

Actually, I just made the whole thing up. Wanted to see if you'd drop that tranny again :eek::haha: JK Glad it worked out for you!
