Air bag relay?

Whats the purpose of a relay between my compressor and power? Do I need it? Heath

You might want to ask in the suspension forum, but it's best practice to use a relay to protect your circuit. The relay goes between the pressure switch and the compressor. The pressure switch sends the signal to the relay and the relay switches power to the compressor on.

The purpose is to reduce the control amps needed. The compressor needs a lot of amps to run and you don't want to run those wires into the cab. It the same reason that the headlights and winches use relays.

Fuses need to be sized appropriately to protect the components that they are protecting. If you use a fuse with with an increased rating you are placing your components in jeopardy.

Why spend money on a fuse and holder, just wire it direct? Promise to send pics of the cool pyrotechnics show if it fails please.

Seriously, there is a proper way to wire a component with a large amp draw. It includes a turn on relay fed by a fused power source. This protects the component and the source from damage in the event of malfunction or failure.

This might give you a better understanding of how it works.
