1970 front suspension
Hey every1, I have a few questions for my project/daily driver. I have a '70 GMC 1/2 ton 2wd with 6 lug/front drums and want to convert to 5 lug disc from my '79 2wd. Now I did see the nice bit about the possible swaps, looks good nice work. But is there more detailed info for the swap as far as locating the cross member from the '79 onto the '70 frame or is it just a direct bolt in with exsisting holes, etc.
Another question, will it make a difference if using 2" lowering spring/shocks for '73-87 2wd with the cross member from the '70? I have never done this before, so I'm triing 2 have everything possible lined up so that when I do park the '70 it will only be down for a short while. True I won't be able to have everything accounted for but any more info you guys can give me will help and be appreciated. |
Re: 1970 front suspension
Welcome to the forum ce134blu. Take a look at this FAQ- "Drum to Disc" conversions 67-70"This should give you some great insight on the conversion you are planning.
If you need further assistance please let us know. |

ce134blu,... Welcome to the board with your 1st post!
Look at the link that n2trux posted. It's not necessary to swap the crossmember itself. I would get your '79 crossmember. Strip it down and inspect all the parts. Rebuild the a-arms. Clean and paint. Then when you have time to park your truck,... pull all the original a-arms and spindles off and replace with your freshly reconditioned parts. Also swap the steering linkage and the P/S box from the '79. |
Re: 1970 front suspension
Thanks guys, you rock. Im allready ordering up new bushings for all the '79 parts, sway bar etc. Have things soaking in cleaner to double check for damage, then I will paint it. Im also ordering the 2" spring/shock lowering kit for the front end, leave the back for now. I will post some picks after this weekend.
