what is the easiest way to replace the throwout bearing for the clutch?
I was wondering what is the easiest way to replace the throwout bearing. Can you do it without taking the transmission out completely? If you have pictures of the process i would love to see them. thanks

You will have to slide the trans back far enough to get the bearing off the shaft...6-8 inches. drive shaft removal, starter removal, possible exhaust issues, trans mounts....so...yes..pretty much have to remove the trans...you just dont have to take it out.

72freak is right. If you do go to all the trouble of replacing it, i would go ahead and replace the entire clutch....depending on how old it is.

Thats what I figured but just out of curiousity does anyone make a Hydralic throw out bearing set up for these old 4 speeds?

Hydraulic throwout bearings were available when I rebuilt Old Yeller. I didn't get one though. That was 5 years ago. I'm sure they're still on the market.

why do a half ass job pop it out and inspect the flywheel and clutch pak see if theres any springs loose or broken ,i would resuface the flywheel and install new kit ,the throwbearing goes out most likey the clutch wear is uneven ,dont forget to change the pilot bearing too

You don't have to touch the starter, trans mounts or anything like that to swap a TO bearing. Remove the trans and there it is.

Re: what is the easiest way to replace the throwout bearing for the clutch?
Where there's a will, there's a way. Years ago I bought two (2) 1/2-13 x 12" long hex bolts. Cut the heads off and grind a healthy screwdriver slot in the new end. Remove the top two bolts from the trans, replace them with the long studs and remove the rest of the bolts. Assuming that everything else is out of the way, you can slide the trans straight back enough to remove the t/o bearing. Yes, you should check all the other parts (see above), but this will get it done without having to physically lifting the trans.
Good Luck ! |

Slick idea putting the trans on studs like that.

i wasnt planning on doing a half ass job. I was planning on buying the whole clutch kit but was also wondering if there was anyone who made a hydraulic throw out bearing kit for these trucks and if so who makes them.
