Top Speed

I have a little poll-type question for you all,
My 1984 stock height C-10 1/2-3/4 ton with it's stock engine and 700R4 seems like it hits a brick wall @ 100mph.
It seems like that flat front end is the cause because I know it has enough power to do better.
I am not telling anyone to "go out and see" and I would further advise anyone doing that to have new name brand tires on the ride.
What have you seen out of your trucks?

82BlackBeast 03-27-2003 08:59 AM

I was able to get about 125mph out of my old '77. It had a 350 with a TH350, not sure what gears. It was bone stock and would cruise at that without too much trouble. Its hard to say what it would top out at with it only having an 85mph speedo. I got the 125 when I was chasing a friends Camaro one night and he told me about what we were running. I never had it much over that I don't think. Due to some other "issues" I haven't had my current truck over 100mph, but there again I still have an 85mph speedo so its hard to say exactly. I think it would top 140mph without any problem but once you top 155 or so it takes a ton of power to push the truck through the air much faster. It doesn't help that we're all driving a "flying brick" as far as aerodynamics go...:p

CHaingKaiShek 03-27-2003 09:05 AM

my 73 c-10 1/2 ton pickup will bury the new speedometer needle (120mph) with reletive ease, however you can feel the wind hit the truck in gusts, and it does have an effect. ;)

My truck has a semi-built (heads,cam,exaust,intake) 350 v-8 with a TH-350 tranny 3.07 rear gears..

Soon to have a more extreme 350, Th-700r4 and 3.73s with an Eaton POSI :)

She's a brick off the line, but once she rev's a bit she's a screamer.

I've had mine over 100MPH easily with the speedo pegged and coming back around. Mine is also like Jeff's where it can get scooting on the highway but a dog off the line

LOHRTBT 03-27-2003 12:42 PM

I dunno....it quit reading at 85 and stopped moving at 5mph!! lol But i Was still gaining speed. heheehe

87 STEPPER 03-27-2003 12:52 PM

Yeah, same here i've had mine back around to 15 MPH and she still had plenty left in her but i didn't have the nutz to go any faster.

Im not shure what that work's out to in MPH cuz there's a lotta space between 85 and 5 as you all know.

My guess it's about 125 or 130 mph.

And my tires are only rated to 115

PHOENIX 03-27-2003 01:31 PM

Fastest Ive gone since the gauges have been in has been around 110. Engine was racing in the 4k range. Once I get rid of this sm465, then Ill see how fast she goes :)

gldevall 03-27-2003 01:32 PM

Maybe 90. lol

Tom 03-27-2003 01:59 PM

took my 78 to 130mph when I first got it. Not going to try that again anytime soon unless Im at the tract.

Low87 03-27-2003 02:52 PM

A few years ago I was by a friends Z car on the highway in the middle of nowhere. We got side by side and pegged it. We both slowed down about the same time (his rear wing windows slammed shut and my truck felt like it was about to float), he said we maxed at 135. That was with a recently rebuilt 305 TBI.

LOHRTBT 03-27-2003 02:55 PM

Get it big dawg!! lol
I had my old 305 up to 130-135 racing a buddy in a Contour SVT. :)

J-Spec C10 03-27-2003 02:57 PM

How's 140 Km/h with 32"x10" mudders? On a 2wd 305/700r4 :D

I just kept thinking "Man, if one of these tires blows I'm so screwed" :D

Mike76251 03-27-2003 06:26 PM

Thanks for the reply guys and gals,
I too thought my truck should go faster than 100 but I felt that "floating" feeling and I know what that means.
It means you are about to leave this earth!

I miss my car that would be doing 150 and only feel like 45.
Well.......not that much as it would not haul 10,000 lbs!

messed up c-10 03-27-2003 06:49 PM

I've gotten mine up to about 75 or 80 before it maxed out.

Messed up C-10,
I know what you mean my man!!
Here is the cure.
Only $5000 if you do all your own work (!)

apstguy 03-27-2003 08:31 PM

Like everyone said, it isn't an accurate reading because the speedometer ends at 85. I had mine to about 110-115. It was screaming and I was watching the gas gauge move faster than a clock. I could have probably gotten faster, but I would have blown the engine.

MSL 03-27-2003 10:40 PM

I have gotten my truck up to 80-85mph on the freeway and still had more to go but didnt want to push it since i was getting that floting feeling too. thats the un fun part.:bowtie:

Ol' Grey 03-28-2003 01:15 AM

I've had my truck to what I would estimate at 110mph. The speedo goes to 85 and the needle was straight down :D
My tires are BFG 295/50-15...H rated I think.
Had it in drive and the rear is geared 3.08

Prerunner1982 03-28-2003 01:42 AM

ok.. with the old 305.. i could go about 90 before it just wouldnt go anymore.. 305/th350/3.08s and 235/75s

now... with stock 350... of course with 85 mph speedo.. i have a small peg that stops the needle.. the needle gets to bouncing.. bouncing between about 65 and 85.. almost faster than i can see it..when i finally let off. it had some left in her.. wasnt much over 4k rpm.

Oh come on........... Peg that tach just once!!!!!!!!!!
You only live once!!!! LOL

swervin ervin 03-28-2003 01:49 AM

If I pegged the tach, I for sure wouldn't be able to go 160 mph. It would be throwing rods out like a slingshot.
