Air ride removal, back to static?

Since I decided "not" to sell my truck. Ive been on the fence trying to decide if I want to remove all my air ride stuff on my 69 SWB and change things up and go back to being static (still low). I was just curious if anyone else has ever thought about doing this, or has done it.

I think my truck has ended up being more "hot rod/muscle truck" than a slammed layed out truck that actually "needs" air ride to get off the ground and drive.

Anyone else ever consider doing this?

Not sure where the benefit will come from swapping it out?

The benefit of leaving it as is would be a known, good, ride quality & the ability to raise it up slightly for easier servicabilty as well as pressure adjustments for when you start hitting the track @ GG's events ;) .

Well I don't think of my truck as needing air to get off the ground to drive and my truck has alittle go to it also. It's more muscle so I can see where your coming from but look at it like this, if you can set it and forget it like with a ride pro system then when you cruise to a show or something you slam it down in the weeds and be happy. If you have a static drop your kinda at the fate of the roads with no adjustment. Just my opinion.

You can have air ride and not lay frame just depends how the system is set up.

Well said Shortbed......my air comp stoppee working and I have been riding around for a month without touching the ride switchs.....now if your bed is cut and you where going to take out a notch and put in a new floor I could see it..but if your like me with a full floor then you can still use your truck like a truck ride low and carry a load if you want to?? seems to be the best of both worlds thats what swayed me

Re: Air ride removal, back to static?

This truck is done..... as in the air system is installed, functions, & needs nothing. While I don't believe it will serve a 'dual purpose' functionality like Hottrucks ride, it doesn't need to w/2 other work trucks readily available.

I just don't see where there's benefit to remove something that functions & isn't broke.

The only way I see it makes sense is if your going with a full coil over system. If you wanted to make it more competitive on the track, I would follow your logic. Even if that is your goal, I would try to tune what you have before starting from scratch.

I would only consider swapping to the Hotchkis C10 set-up or possibly the yet to be released 'Touring' Dropmember from Porterbuilt. Anything else? Leave it alone.

While at Air Ride/Ridetech Snaps one of the employees there had his 67 on the autocross track quite often and was extrememly competitive within 1-2 seconds of the big dogs which wasnt bad in a c-10 we would drive to the show auto cross then drive back home. There are so many benefits to air vs static

Re: Air ride removal, back to static?

Tell you what, I'll buy you a set of springs and you can send me the air ride set up...that's a pretty even trade...haha!

Everyone has their own reason for doing what they want to do. However, there's a lot reasons an air ride system in perfect working condition is "cooler" that static. Just go with your gut and do what makes you happy.

Leave the air ride in, so many advantages over static.

Wow, I wasn't really expecting this many different responses. You guys definately opened my eyes to alot of different benefits of having air ride that I either got used to and overlooked , or just didn't think about at all.

I guess I'm just itching to change things up a bit, maybe I'll invest my energy into doing something else to the truck and leave the air ride stuff installed.

Anybody got any suggestions or ideas on other things you can change on a "finished" truck, I'm open to suggestions.

Give Mr. Porter a call. Having seen your truck in person & logging a few miles of road in it w/you, that touring set-up would be the ticket & not require significant whacking under the hood.

You got a link to any pics of the touring set up you speak of ? I went to the Porterbuilt website , but I couldn't find it.

playing with the pressure a tid bit 1-5 psi depending on the vehicle will not effect the height but will change the spring rate noticeably also getting a good adjustable shock plays a strong roll:metal:

69chevyshort – What you do with your suspension depends on what you plan to do with the truck in the long run. Our philosophy in designing our C10 Total Vehicle System was to build a bolt-on kit that gives the truck a really cool ride stance, a comfy and usable ride, sports car handling and total adjustability. The design was inspired by Stock Car technology, and has already been proven to work really well on the street, drag strip and autocross. Overall, though, the main goal is that it works REALLY well for high performance street driving.

Re: Air ride removal, back to static?

I agree that truck is killer....part of my problem is the weight of the BB Caddy on the front end so trying to get anywhere near a 50/50 weight tranfer is a joke..I have thought about moving the battery tot he back of the truck but is the 30lbs going to make that much differnce??

30lbs extreme front to extreme rear will make a difference. A small one, but it's still better.
