I would like to replace or repair the turn signal lever. How do I get to the whole works inside the housing that covers the column; do I have to take the steering wheel off?

yep...take the steering wheel off and you should be able to remove the screw holding the turn lever

I found it best to rebuild the whole column while it was apart what a difference the bearings made

Why do you want to replace it, is it loose?

Yes, but he will need a steering wheel puller.

Or replace the entire column.

I thought I would need the wheel puller; thanks for that. I may not need to replace, but it does need attention. Hard to describe, but it feels really stiff. (I would like a smaller wheel, but my son wants the original!)

I'm with your son....I like the 67-68 wheels too!

Yup, my turn signal lever feels stiff when I go to use it too.
Not so sure there's anything wrong. Some of the column gurus
are invited to butt in here ;)

Getting to the lever is a cake walk. Once the steering wheel is off.
The puller works like any puller...bolts to part A and jacks away
from part B. You should be able to borrow one plus many parts
houses loan tools like this out for free.

If you go to investigate, do yourself a favor...DO put tape
with marks on your wheel and collar so your steering wheel is true
to the world when you reassemble. Never hurts to clean and lightly
lube plus, I personally, would replace the turn signal return springs
while you are in there...very cheap at the parts store.

THERE WAS a post way back when about cutting down the 67-68
steering wheels, though I would think it might work on any
era, HERE. The tutorial portion starts at post 13.

Have fun with your learning experience!

WHOA! Never even THOUGHT about changing the diameter of the wheel. That is pretty cool actually. With the power steering the truck now has, turning is not an issue, but those cabs dont have tons of room for things like bulging biceps or bulging beer bellies for that matter; I dont have to wrestle the wheel like I did before and can afford a little breathing room!
